1935UDG-42Paris, Grasset, 1935. In-8, édition originale de ce roman tauromachique, qui obtint le Prix Goncourt l'année de sa parution. Il y raconte l'histoire d'un torero célèbre mais usé, qui décide d'arrêter la corrida à la mort de son banderillero. Sa maîtresse s'y oppose et parvient, avec l'aide de son impresario, à le convaincre de retourner dans l'arène. Tirage limité à 1011 exemplaires numérotés, celui-ci n° 619, un des 960 sur Alfax Navarre. Reliure Jotau, breveté S.G.D.G, du nom de son inventeur Joseph Taupin, qui réalisa un essai de reliure industrielle dans les années 1930. Le procédé fut mis au point par Joseph Taupin dans les ateliers de cartonnages et reliures Brodart et Taupin. Entièrement réalisé en "Pollopas", une matière plastique proche de la galalithe mise au point par Kulhmann, la reliure Jotau s'inscrit parfaitement dans l'époque Art Déco. Les plats sont entièrement montés sur gonds, les bords biseautés, teintés dans la masse, ici en vert foncés. Dos lisse, titre et auteur gravés sur une plaque métallique, tranche supérieure dorée. Contreplats et gardes de très beau papier marbré typiquement dans le goût Art Déco. «Les papiers de garde sont dans le goût de l'époque généralement des cailloutés assez gros, produits à la cuve, ou des papiers réalisés au pochoir avec des formes géographiques aux couleurs plutôt vives et avec, souvent, des ajouts de peinture dorée ou argentée. Le papier semble parfois avoir été finement calendré pour lui donner un effet légèrement moiré. Les contreplats sont à encadrement avec l espace central en creux revêtu de papier reliure.» (Calais, Les reliures Jotau, p. 121). Reconnu pour sa connaissance de l'Espagne et son goût pour la tauromachie, Joseph Peyré donna son nom au prix remis chaque année par la peña taurine de Garlin au triomphateur des novilladas estivales et au Club taurin de Pau.
