Ouvrage illustré de 18 lithographies originales en couleurs de Maurice Elie Sarthou, dont 12 sur double page, tirées sur les presses de Fernand Mourlot. Maurice Elie Sarthou a gravé les 131 pierres nécessaires pour les lithographies. Préfacé par André Chamson. Recueil contient les poèmes en provençal avec la traduction française en regard "Lou Biou" (Le taureau), "Glori a Diéu" (Gloire à Dieu), "Soulomi" (Pénombre). Tirage limité à 176 exemplaires numérotés et signés par l'artiste et l'éditeur, celui-ci un des 40 exemplaires numérotés sur Rives avec une suite hors-texte sur papier de Rives sous chemise. Maurice Elie Sarthou, 1911-2000, peintre, figuratif puis abstrait, fut élève de l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier et de Paris, il obtint nombreux prix. Le taureau dans son espace camargais est un élément très important dans l'inspiration de Maurice Elie Sarthou, son travail autour des couleurs, du mouvement, de la lumière et de la vibration de la matière, l'améne à en faire un théme récurrent dans sa notion de représentation de l'espace, souvent proche de l'abstraction. 194001115San Jose 1940. Silver gelatin photographs 8 x 10 inches. Some with inscriptions to the photographer Jose Valverde by the various bullfighers. Near fine with minimal wear. A scarce suite of photographs showing the world of Costa Rican bullfighting in the mid-20th century all taken by the photographer Jose Valverde. Though Costa Rican bullfighting currently differs from the Spanish variety in that the aim is to only dodge the bulls and not to kill them the form practiced here appears to be more in line with the Spanish version with many of the bulls shown with spears protruding from them as they charge the bullfighters. Notably four photographs show women bullfighters notable as this was the period when women first worked as bullfighters. Overall an uncommon survival. unknown

1854WRCAM46994Havana 1854. Broadside 12 1/2 x 8 inches. Printed on green paper. Old fold lines. Light wear and soiling minor separation at some folds. A few contemporary notations. Very good. Cuban broadside advertising a bullfight featuring matador Don Manuel Rodriguez Lanza and the "8 toros de muerte." The top of the sheet features a woodcut of a matador holding his cape out to a bull. The first swordsman for the fight is Manuel Diaz Lavi with two alternates listed. The names of the Banderilleros and Picadores for the fight are also noted. Bullfighting was a popular entertainment in Cuba during the Spanish colonial period though it was done away with after Cuban independence at the beginning of the 20th century. unknown books
