Excellent condition overall with some toning small chips and various wear to margins but overall quite well preserved. Near Fine. Isabel and Monroe Smith a married couple from Northfield Massachusetts started the American Youth Hostel movement in 1933 after gaining inspiration from Richard Schirrman’s German Hosteling Organization. The movement grew quickly with thirty hostels operating throughout New England within the first year. The first hostel was the Northfield Chateau a large mansion on Birnham Road that was eventually demolished in 1963. The network of chaperoned hostels created the opportunity for safe bicycle-based travel as shown in the posters offered here. <br /> <br /> Offered here are three early posters from the movement designed by Isabel Smith each with her signature in the image. All posters are variations on the cycling theme. One of them states that “When the grand day’s bicycling is done… no fare can compare with the Royal ‘Hostellers’ Own.†Smith’s design aesthetic is quite accomplished and we are surprised to find no examples of these in institutional collections. New York; Verso consists of assorted punctuation marks slightly offset all over the card plus signs pound signs quotation marks equal signs periods parentheses marks dollar signs exclamation signs etc. Card Conditions; all are near fine with slight bumping to one corner from the envelope. Envelope Condition: Very Good; paste on title label has light soiling and a splash mark; the envelope has bumped corners and the metal clasp is missing the two closing prongs; blue pencil figures on reverse. 1948197571948. Film The Bicycle Thief. Archive of 3 Original Silver Gelatin Vintage photos. All measures 8" x 10". Glossy black and white. The Bicycle Thief is an Italian drama directed by Vittorio De Sica. It follows Lamberto Maggiorani as a poor father searching in post-World War II Rome for his stolen bicycle without which he will lose his job and family. The film was given an Academy Honorary Award in 1950 and just four years after its release was deemed the greatest film of all time by the magazine Sight & Sound's poll of filmmakers and critics. The films star Lamberto Maggiorani is featured in both images. Two are still images from the film. The other is a press photo of Maggiorani working as a stone and brick mason in a promotional shot for the film. A caption on the verso reads "Given sufficient time even a prosperous cinema star will come to the point of accepting any kind of menial job when he and his family are without food. Maggiorani accepted odd jobs as stone and brick mason on a day to day basis." Additional stamps from "International News Photos" are on verso with the date "Feb. 9 1950." L’illustrateur Victorien Fabien Vieillard, dit Fabien Launay, est né le 23 mars 1877 à Neuilly-sur-Seine et décédé le 7 février 1904 à Arcachon, donc très jeune et juste après la parution de cet album.
