ill., br. Questo volume scaturisce da un progetto che è stato al tempo stesso didattico, di ricerca e infine editoriale e si è sviluppato nell'arco degli ultimi dieci anni. Assume, giungendo a compimento, anche un coté o un intento intellettuale e, per certi versi, politico. "Le verità del velo" vuole significare due cose: da una parte riconoscere a un oggetto - il velo che copre e dissimula le identità dei volti, dei corpi, degli individui - una certa unità di funzione, quale che ne sia la specifica declinazione spazio-temporale e culturale; dall'altra accettare, appunto, che tale oggetto sostanzialmente univoco abbia di fatto una varietà di espressioni, ricezioni, interpretazioni che lo rendono polisemico. Non solo, dunque, in contesti diversi può essere prodotto, commercializzato, indossato, rappresentato, descritto e interpretato in maniere diverse, tutte vere, a seconda dei punti di vista, ma esso anche nel medesimo contesto, anche nella stessa realtà circoscritta, anche nella stessa specifica oggettualità può avere più significati e conseguentemente ottemperare a esigenze di produzione di valore simbolico o di verità in maniera massimamente soggettiva. Contemporaneamente è un oggetto che produce discussione, dibattito, agonismi: ciascuno può cercare di dire la sua rispetto ai motivi per cui è indossato, per cui è imposto, per cui è scelto; ma anche rispetto ai motivi per cui è tolto, per cui è sottratto, per cui è abbandonato. Le stesse persone possono farne usi diversi in contesti diversi, attribuirgli un significato diverso a seconda delle situazioni, sfruttarlo, financo, in base a istanze e aspettative variabili. Dunque non esiste solo la verità di chi lo indossa, ma anche di chi lo fa indossare; ed esistono le verità di chi interpreta questo atto e lo considera ora simbolo di emarginazione e sottomissione, ora di emancipazione e libertà.
