I due alpinisti italiani Barenghi e Rosenkranz, con la loro fedele guida indigena, dopo aver raggiunta la vetta del monte Api (7 mila metri) nella catena dell' Himalaya, si attendavano più in basso per tornare poi al campo base. Ma Rosenkranz stremato dalle fatiche e dal freddo, decedeva poco dopo sotto la tenda, mentre Barenghi, proseguendo da solo la discesa, si perdeva in una tormenta di neve. Così la spedizione italiana si concludeva con una tragedia, ma la meta era stata conseguita.
