Dent made the first ascent of the Dru (1978) and visited the Caucasus several times during the last decades of the century. He was instrumental in founding the Association of British Members of the Swiss Alpine Club and became its first President in 1879; an obituary and memoir was published when the Association opened the first British hut on the Allalinhorn in 1912.
