216 p. Two title pages including a facsimile of the original title page from the 1840 French edition. Text in both English and French, with the original French text on the lower half of each page (translation by Alfred Wills). Map. 8vo. 220 mm. Original brown pebbled cloth binding; spine lettered in gold. XLib. [Juniata College]. "From the Library of James F. Pepper". First Edition in English. Canon Rendu, afterwards Bishop of Annecy, was the first to describe the ductility of glacier ice which enables it to plastically mould to its surroundings in spite of its brittle character. The publication of this volume was prompted by the polemic between John Tyndall (author of Glacier of the Alps) and James Forbes (author of Norway and its Glaciers). Tyndall had accused Forbes of failing fully to acknowledge the achievements of Rendu's theory of glaciers, and in the present work George Forbes attempted to defend his father (d. 1868) by offering a full record of the debate. To this end, Forbes junior reprinted articles by Tait and Ruskin on the controversy, and was aided in his translation of Rendu's work by Alfred Wills, Forbes elder's dedicated disciple and sometime President of the Alpine Club.
