With the engraved bookplate of Herbert Cooke on front paste-down. One of the greatest Alpine memoirs. Moore climbed with Whymper and Horace Walker, and was a member of the party which made the first ascent of Mont Blanc via the Brenva ice-ridge. Originally published privately in 1867 in an edition of 100 copies. The plates are remarkable for their extensive and detailed captions. Dent made the first ascent of the Dru (1978) and visited the Caucasus several times during the last decades of the century. He was instrumental in founding the Association of British Members of the Swiss Alpine Club and became its first President in 1879; an obituary and memoir was published when the Association opened the first British hut on the Allalinhorn in 1912. The binding is signed on front free endpaper verso. This splendid copy was presented as a prize in the Grand Concours Annual of the Societe Nationale des Professeurs de Francais. It was awarded in December 1890 to J W Blagden of Dulwich College.The society's fine presentation bookplate, completed in MS and with blind-embossed stamp, is tipped to front paste-down.
