Begun as a commercial speculation, this bridge project, like others, became the centre of an important political controversy, involving questions of governmental roles in commercial development and public protection and access. Dorchester Neck and the annexation of that peninsula to the town of Boston. The state Legislature approved a petition in 1804 to annex the Neck to Boston and authorised a toll bridge to link the two areas. The Boston South Bridge opened in 1805.
Magnificant piece of vintage G.E. Radiotron tube ephemera. Printed upon sturdy card stock in blue and white, this 7.25" x 3.4" three-panel item folds out to 7.25" x 10.1". Inside of first panel explains bridge scoring, complete with insert which slides vertically to reveal scoring for various tricks. Inside of panel two is a (complete) bridge scorepad bearing a few light pencil notes. Inside of third panel lists dozens of international short wave stations. Insert in third panel slides vertically to display the frequency, call letters and location of many Canadian radio stations. Book is in excellent condition, as new. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Huge book: 10 1/2" x 13 1/2" 296 pages with a bump to the lover front cover as the only flaw, though text block is slighly wavy, could be publisher's error, as there are no other signs of moisture contact. Filled with b&w photos thoroughout, some full page, most very large. Contents are a series of questions, chronologically arranged, such as When did the construction of the main cables begin? Do the tops of the towers actually move? Did they really consider putting a second deck on the bridge? etc. Pages 157 -- 287 are Highlights from Annual Reports from the Highway and Transportation District Staff and Board of Directors. The final seciton details the Seismic retrofit and design. Impressive volume.
