Although Strauss and his original team incorporated Ellis d. 1949 Strauss managed to shunt Ellis aside in November 1931 after several delays and forced him into retirement and long stretches of unemployment even though he continued work unpaid on the calculations and structure of the Golden Gate Bridge. Else Good. <br/><br/> A fine Sermon delivered soon after the repeal of the Stamp Act and just before enactment of the equally execrated Townshend Acts. Bridge warns that rulers have the duty to promulgate "only such laws as.are fit for the government of rational intelligent moral agents all equal and upon a par antecedent to any political combinations among men;" and not to abuse their God-given trust "by serving the purposes of ambition usurpation and tyranny.But I must not enlarge." <br/> Whatever the form of government all men "have a natural right" to enjoy freedom: "every man protected in his just rights sitting under his own vine and under his own fig tree.and none to make him afraid." Careful to be conciliatory he praises English rule even Parliament "which tho' liable to mistakes has yet been attentive to the good of the nation and kingdom and her colonies and dependencies." First edition. 12 1/2" x 9 1/2" oblong quarto tied gold gilt stamped stiff wrappers with a mounted view of the bridge on the front cover 103 pp. illustrated from photographs diagrams and drawings. Many stage-by-stage photographic views of the bridge as it nears completion. An enormous engineering project for its day that took from 1910 until 1917 to complete. In 1907 the south half of the first bridge over the river collapsed killing 100 men. In 1910 work began again and were nearing completion when the suspended bridge span that was being hoisted into place fell into the river. The huge undertaking supports trains on two tracks. The over-sized stiff wrappers have a number of small closed tears along the extremities but the interior is clean and quite serviceable for an overall very good copy of a fascinating booklet.
