The journal of a young man who ventured gingerly into the field of literature while attempting to handle his dear mother his fiancé and her son from a previous marriage. Written by Richard Haydn a British-American comedy actor the comedy actor who voiced the Caterpillar in Disney's Alice in Wonderland and played Max in the film adaptation of The Sound of Music. This was his only novel. Illustrated by Ronald Searle CBE an English artist and satirical cartoonist comics artist sculptor medal designer and illustrator. The Episode at Toledo 1967. Set in Spain this novel follows Hetta Paloczy as she uncovers a Communist plot to assassinate an American Admiral during his visit to inspect a NATO base. Written by Mary Ann Dolling under the pseudonym Anne Bridge an English writer. In the original full cloth binding. Externally excellent. The dust wrapper of The Journal of Edwin Carp is price-clipped while The Episode at Toledo is not. Both wrappers are very smart with light shelf wear and light discolouration. Book is in excellent condition with a tiny bit of wear at lower corners only. Dark blue cloth covers with embossed gilt print at cover and spine. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. 319 pages in oblong format. Chapters include: Beginning in law and order, Causatives in (same), Marshals -- their jails and detention, codes, courts and governments, Agencies develop, Training to professionalism, Death in the line of duty, Progressions in looks, equipment, mobility, communications, etc. Heavily illustrated with photos, some highlights include the contents displayed of two WA St. patrol cars, one in 1960 and one in 1988; air surviellance over the years, crashes, bridge being swept away by log debris, motorcycle cop stunts, Still and pot raids, drug busts and killings, Green River murders, Kenneth Bianchi, Lists of marshals and chiefs from all over Wa state, directors of the Secret Service, State Patrol, etc. Inscribed on the title page by author to noted N.W. historian Paul Dorpat with letter from same to same. First edition #939 of a run of 2000.
Book is in excellent condition, as new. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Huge book: 10 1/2" x 13 1/2" 296 pages with a bump to the lover front cover as the only flaw, though text block is slighly wavy, could be publisher's error, as there are no other signs of moisture contact. Filled with b&w photos thoroughout, some full page, most very large. Contents are a series of questions, chronologically arranged, such as When did the construction of the main cables begin? Do the tops of the towers actually move? Did they really consider putting a second deck on the bridge? etc. Pages 157 -- 287 are Highlights from Annual Reports from the Highway and Transportation District Staff and Board of Directors. The final seciton details the Seismic retrofit and design. Impressive volume.

Headpiece attributed to Crane in pencil at head of first page and clearly his central figure of Diana with reapers on either side. The first stanza reads: 'I'll rede ye a lay of a goodly band That gathered from near and far To a broad fair Strath of Bonnie Scotland 'Mid the woods and waters rare.' Second stanza: 'O! the Manse of Kinloch a warm retreat Stands up on the hillside clear; And Marlee House lies snugly sweet On the marge of the crystal mere.' References to 'Young Sidney and Edmund names of renown' and 'a Printer's Devil come from the East'. Dated in type for a second time at the end: 'SEPTEMBER 17 1892.' Scarce: the only copy on WorldCat or COPAC in the National Library of Scotland. Printed not stated. [1892.] unknown
