Begun as a commercial speculation, this bridge project, like others, became the centre of an important political controversy, involving questions of governmental roles in commercial development and public protection and access. Dorchester Neck and the annexation of that peninsula to the town of Boston. The state Legislature approved a petition in 1804 to annex the Neck to Boston and authorised a toll bridge to link the two areas. The Boston South Bridge opened in 1805.
