Mentre il primo volume lo accompagnava negli iniziali rudimenti della dichiarazione, questo gli fornisce le basi tecniche per un buon gioco con il morto e per un valido controgioco. Gli insegna, cioè, a fare più prese possibili sia in attacco che in difesa. Accanto quindi all'enunciazione delle principali manovre a cui dovrà assoggettarsi il vivo (tutte accompagnate da esercizi che rendono chiari i concetti e le logiche espresse), vengono trattate anche le iniziali manovre di controgioco (attacchi contro contratti a colore e a senza atout).
