Setting forth concepts related to weighing and measuring meant developing both practical and philosophical links with the world. When ancient civilizations used seeds produced in the fertile soils of Mesopotamia to establish the first units of weight, the observations they made in relation to the act of measuring created a springboard for civilizations to thrive. The 2nd millennium BC saw the frontiers of discovery advancing along the trade routes between Mesopotamia and Anatolia. While the fascination with precision in weighing and measuring continued, there was a corresponding migration of myths from the realms of the gods to the land of mortals, and concepts like truth and justice became associated with the balancing of the suspended pans of weighing scales. In ancient Egypt the sins of the deceased were weighed on a set of scales, while in ancient Greek and Roman cultures, the weighing scale was a symbol of justice and an indispensable illustrative element in the depiction of gods and goddesses. In Byzantine society, too, the act of just and accurate weighing resonated deeply with ethical sensibilities and recalled the weighing of souls. And in the Ottoman Empire, precise weighing represented the foundations of trust, not only in trade but also just as notably in religious life. "Man is the measure of all things: of the things that are, that they are, of the things that are not, that they are not," proclaimed Protagoras. The endeavor to measure the world with a handful of units brought forth the capacity to recreate it in the abstract. As the measurement of discovery became the substance of myths, weighing and measuring, beyond being mere physical actions, became an important means of self-expression to those captivated by the universe and what lay beyond the boundaries of knowledge. (Selchuk Sultan Alâeddin Siyavush, b. 1277) 'Djimri' according to the writings of Osman Ferid Saglam, the word 'Cimri' is used as a synonym for 'ephony-sultan'. Yazicioglu Ali, in his book entitled 'Tevârih-i Âl-i Selçuk' (No: 1390, Revan Library, the Topkapi Palace) argues that Cimri was not a name attributed to a vagabond who had claimed that he was Siyavus bin Izzeddin, but a derisive adjective used for him by pro-Seljuk historians. The actual meaning of the word is 'ordinary', or 'III-bred', or 'one who has sprung up from anywhere'.

This catalogue was published on the occasion of Yusuf Sevinçli's exhibition 'Oculus' at Galerist Tepebasi between 14.12.201 7-27.01.2018. The exhibition comprises analogue, black & white photographs taken mostly in France and Turkey. Taking its title from an old Roman architectural term for a small circular or oval window or the round openings found at the center of domes. Often an oculus allows a concentrated beam of light into an otherwise dark interior and so is threshold between a world of light and one of shadow. In Sevinçli's images we are in a shadow-world in which light, meaning and beauty pass fleetingly, out of reach and into memory. There is a beautiful, poetic intelligence in Sevinçli's photographs. They are, we are told images of actual things and places. The artist's sensibility, however, articulated through the elegant contingencies of the analogue photographic process; the framing of the shot, the manipulation of the negative, the quality of the printing, renders reality dreamlike. The images are a dream-state, rich with ambiguity and metaphor; A flower, silhouetted, becomes epic and architectural. A white circle painted on a dark ground, the casual record of an act of art making takes on occult significance. A woman pulls skin tight like cloth, another's eyes sparkle with light. Stream rises, spectral like from the street. A man in movement, arms outstretched, his head hidden from us, is perhaps dancing or falling. Stairs ascend into luminosity and fiction. Political in their sensibility of oppressive ambiguity, poetic in their search for moments of transcendence, Sevinçli's photographs are exquisite signs, only partially intelligible, full of melancholy and hope. 1000 copies were printed.
