Remarquable ouvrage, peu courant, une référence sur le sujet, fruit de la collection d'un passionné. Superbe illustration composée de 28 planches hors-texte en couleurs, 112 planches hors-texte en noir et blanc et 6 gravures dans le texte. Exemplaire non coupé. Issu d’une famille de commerçants textiles spécialisés dans la broderie mécanique, Ernest Iklé (1848-1936) prend la succession de l’affaire de Saint-Gall avec ses frères. Mais c'est à Paris, où il s'est installé, qu'il laisse libre cours à sa passion pour le sujet. Il constitue une substantielle collection d’échantillons et amasse une documentation tout aussi impressionnante, ce qui lui permet, en 1931, de publier son ouvrage, aussitôt considéré comme une référence. C’est d’ailleurs à partir de cette somme que, dès l’année suivante, le Musée du Textile de Saint-Gall inaugure une exposition sur la broderie mécanique qui durera jusqu’en 1945.
