An exceptional photo album documenting the photographer and his companion “W.N.B.†through the rugged and breathtaking country of what is now the Rio Grand Gunnison and White River National Forests in Colorado. Inspired by naturalist conservationists as John Muir and the efforts of President Roosevelt encouraging Americans to see the West extended camping trips were embraced with enthusiasm and typically with wagons pack mules and pack horses until World War I after which automobile camping became much more the norm. The photographer opens with shots of the covered camp wagon near Carnero Pass close to the Saguache River and later along Sheep’s Creek Carnero Creek in the La Garita Mountains. Also featured are well-composed images of the Cochetopa Pass on the Continental Divide about 25 miles from Carnero Pass with views of Sawtooth Mountain and San Luis Peak. The group traveled towards Gunnison and images capture the scenic beauty of Tenderfoot Mountain in the Gunnison Valley at 9252 feet of elevation. Other stops include Camp Robbers Roost near Almont CO now usually closed for nesting birds in the Winter and additional views of the stark craggy beauty of the Gunnison Valley. The camping trip extended into the present-day Gunnison National Forest including visits to Gothic Mountain from several vantage points Emerald Lake between Gothic Mountain and Crystal River Canon and more. First edition of this scarce promotional souvenir touting the achievement of Hoag and Wilton piloting their 18-foot boat powered by two 4-horsepower Evinrude outboard engines named Lewis & Clark 5680 miles along the Columbia Missouri Illinois & Hudson Rivers in 137 days. When setting out from Astoria OR in a cheap canvas tent the intrepid travelers quickly discovered that it offered not protection from either rain or mosquito’s so they ordered a Peerless Auto Tent in Portland and the durable canvas tent proved essential including surviving golf ball sized hail stones in South Dakota. John Edwin Hoag and partner Ford were photographers for the Automobile Club of Southern California in Los Angeles. Contemporary flexible black cloth gray paper endpapers minor wear rubbing some fraying to spine minor wear & slight bumping to corners front inner hinge & title w/ minor tear repairs edgewear small tear at lower gutter margin still a VG exemplar with manuscript presentation inscription & title from artist to Henry Hanson dated July & Sept. 1912. This exceptional photo album documents the camping boating fishing & hunting activities of visitors to Henry Hanson’s Squirrel Lake Resort in the early 1900’s after the opening of the Wisconsin Northwoods to tourists. The “Good Roads†movement and encouragement of improved highways and railroad expansion opened the area featuring fabulous fishing beautiful forests mild summer weather and stunning fall colours drawing in Presidents movie stars gangsters and families to Squirrel Lake resorts with resorts such as Hanson’s offering cabins for rent by the week hot meal dining boat rentals dock usage and hunting & fishing guides. This album opens with images of the resort including one handcoloured featuring waving stars & stripes flag boat sheds and canoes pulled up on the beach. Many of the images feature iconic Progressive Era views of families setting on the rustic cabin porches standing beside camp tents and rowing on the lake. Also featured are views of rowers seated in boats proud women & men holding their large Pike Bass & Muscallonge fish caught women & men hunters with shotguns picnic scenes and the bucolic backdrop of the resort. A series of photos reveal the transport of the Squirrel Lake Resort visitors from train station in horse-drawn covered wagon and automobile with one image showing three generations seated on their luggage at the depot. The names of the rustic cottages included “Skin Walk Cottage†and “Ma-Ow-Is†while the erected tents provided extra space. Hanson 1858-1951 moved to Minocqua WI in 1893 where he drove a livery team and by 1912 had established his resort on 37 acres on the shores of Squirrel Lake featuring a main lodge and adding cabins and other buildings from time to time set amidst a rustic setting of Pine Hemlock and Birch Trees on the East Shore of the Lake able to house up to 35 guests. His cabins were lighted by electricity supplied with running water shower baths and the excellent cuisine was furnished by the onsite orchards gardens and Jersey dairy cattle with large poultry supply as well. Initially named “Forest Home†by 1912 it had become Squirrel Lake Resort and he would continue operating it until 1936 when he sold the resort to Ed Perreault. Although we were unable to find a reference to the photographer D.E. Kennedy in local Minocqua WI directories or Wisconsin & Illinois photography references a few of the photos in this album are similar to a couple of the contemporary unsigned real photo postcard images in institutional and private holdings. Harrison both signed by her on front and rear endpapers. Early printing of this sequel to Uncle Lisha’s shop written in Vermonter dialect and relating the assorted stories of Sam Lovel as he courts and finally marries Huldah while camping fishing and hunting most days on Lake Champlain. Robinson 1833-1900 was a noted Quaker author from a well-respected and artistic Vermont family whose writings and art captured the dialect culture and time of pre-Civil War Vermont set in the imaginary town of Danvis largely drawing from his the inhabitants and experiences of Ferrisburgh VT. The books were very popular with Forest & Stream readers in the 19th-Century and one camping enthusiast was inspired to leave an artistic visual record. The first pencil rendering depicts a young person standing near Lake Champlain at the Long Point Campgrounds on Ball Farm near Ferrisburgh VT in 1897 with boater and cabin in the distance. The second of the drawings depicting “Camp Hendee†amidst the trees one of the cottages erected as summer camps at Long Point even though most campers still erected tents for their tenting excursions on the Vermont Lake. Also included are portable folding canvas bath tubs infant table-tubs and folding furnishings for sun porches and sanitariums. Founded originally in 1892 - by R.B. Lang W.G. Gittings J.G. Teall - as th Racine Camp Furniture & Novelty Manufacturing Co. to better serve clientele interested in camping and living by producing tents sleeping bags cots stools folding chairs and leisure furniture. The Company won the 1893 Exposition Gold Medal award for excellence and continued with that name and family-owned until 1989. The price list offers excellent reference a small laid-in ad for the special slipcover made of awning stripes for the folding G Medal Porch Chair and the quintessential Aladdin Thermalware jug and Kampko stoves fill out the offerings.
