First edition thus of this installment in the very popular series of illustrated novels issued by Ryutei Tanehiko 1783-1842 considered one of the 10 principal authors of gesaku -- popular illustrated fiction of the late Edo. By the mid-19th-Century he was virtually a household name and yet despite his celebrity and wide circulation of this many different productions all are quite scarce and even individual parts such as this tend to be uncommon. The splendid woodcuts were designed by Utagawa Kunisada II 1823-1880 who took the name Kunisada II in 1850-51 after marrying Kunisada’s daughter and focused on actors portraits of beautiful geishas along with erotica but his popularity waned in the Meiji period. Autograph letter on seven leaves of blue laid sheets 25x20.5cm. rectos only "Kent" blind-stamped at top left-hand corner of each leaf; occasional faint soil spots minor shallow creases and faint fold lines else Very Good or better. Extensive and rather rambling unsigned letter or lyceum address draft "To the President" though which President and of what is not stated in which the author quite possibly a public figure based on references to his "detractors" strongly argues against women's suffrage: "would we have our females eschewing their more gentle nature hardening the finer sensibilities of her mind by rushing to the ballot box And mingling in the excitement of an election thereby throwing off the garb of female modesty and timidity I think not." Though the first leaf has the appearance of a clean copy the author's hand begins to turn sloppy with a number of manuscript corrections in the later leaves. Due to a lack of contemporary references Mary Wollstonecraft is the only person explicitly mentioned we cannot place with certainty a date or author for the item though the hand ink and paper and reference to women tending to wounded soldiers during wartime indicate this was penned within a few years of the Civil War as the women's suffrage movement was beginning to gather steam in the 1870s. unknown

189544165New York December 8th 1895. Autograph letter signed on recto and verso of single cream laid sheet 22x14.5cm.; approx. 85 words; dated 26 West 61st N.Y. Dec 8th and simply addressed to "Parker" presumably Stanton's friend and fellow-suffragist Parker Pillsbury 1809-1898 who with Stanton had co-edited the women's rights newsletter "The Revolution" twenty years earlier. Faint mail folds small unobtrusive archival paper remnants to two corners from having been previously mounted else Near Fine and still quite fresh. Brief contemporary 1897 pencil note at bottom edge "Mrs. Stanton - born Nov. 12 1815 Now past 82 - C.E.R." though based on contents we would place this letter as having been written around 1895. Brief but significant missive addressed to Parker Pillsbury the American minister and women's suffrage advocate regarding a copy of Stanton's "Woman's Bible" she had just sent him. "I wonder if I could interest them a "Mrs. White" and one other sufficiently in the Woman's Bible to sell ten or twenty copies in there sic respective woman's clubs It is published at my expense hence I am trying to push its circulation." The controversial "Woman's Bible" a series of commentaries pertaining to the portions of the Bible relating to women was published in two parts in 1895 and 1898 and composed almost entirely by Stanton alone her committee of Bible revisors finding the project too controversial and harmful to the cause of women's suffrage. Clearly at the time of writing this letter the book was still meeting with resistance thus our placing the date at around 1895 Stanton turning to Pillsbury as a potential source of influential and wealthy patrons she inquires "Is Mrs. White still living & working Is that rich woman that Mr. illegible used to visit in Maine living". But by 1897 the book had become a best seller though many of the members of the women's suffrage movement would continue to distance themselves from it. This letter quite significant as a testimony to the aging Stanton organizer of the historical 1848 Seneca Falls Convention and her continuing indefatigable efforts and initial lack of support in getting this work circulated. 187735872Travellers Club London: February 12th circa 1877. 1877. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling both sides of a sheet of cream paper 7 inches high by 4-1/2 inches wide. Signed "Houghton". Folded twice for mailing. Very good. Houghton writes that "in the confusion of the fire at Fryston I have mislaid a book of addresses" some of which he hopes his correspondent may have. Fryston Hall Castleford West Yorkshire was Houghton's family seat. There was a fire there on November 17 1876. <p>Richard Monckton Milnes 1st Baron Houghton 1809-1885 graduated from Cambridge University where he was a member of the famous Apostles Club along with Alfred Lord Tennyson and other future luminaries. After traveling abroad he returned to London in 1837 and was elected to Parliament as Conservative MP for Pontefract. He left Robert Peel's party over the Corn Law controversy and thereafter was identified in politics with Lord Palmerston who elevated him to the peerage in 1863. A pious man whose writings were often influenced by church matters and who defended the tractarian position he nevertheless accumulated an unsurpassed collection of erotic literature which he bequeathed to the British Library. He published several volumes of poetry but was chiefly distinguished as a patron of literary talent including that of women writers. Among those he assisted or championed were Tennyson Emerson Swinburne and Coventry Patmore. He also supported Elizabeth Gaskell's daughter in her work for women's education. Later simple blue card wraps untitled. 44pp. Lightly sunned along spine region strong and clean. Internally a little spotted and soiled in places with some dampstaining to the final leaf untrimmed with wide margins archival repair to upper right corner of title page the final leaf with the Ode for The Fourth March has been strengthened with archival tissue with some bookseller's pencil codes to lower corner of leaf. A good strong and untrimmed copy with some cosmetic wear and archival work. According to a note by Goodspeed this third edition posthumous was the first to include Samuel Woodworth's "Ode for the Fourth March 1817" on pp.43-44. Burk a transplanted Irishman premiered this work at Boston's Haymarket Theatre in 1798. Though undistinguished as literature the play captured the anti-British zeitgeist and Burk's reputation and fortune were secured by it. Reputation alas failed to save Burk from dying badly: in 1808 while drinking in a Virginia tavern Burk made injudicious remarks at table regarding the character of the French; a nearby citizen of France overhearing challenged Burk to a duel in which the playwright perished the next morning. A brief but diverting account of Burk's career prior to emigration is provided by Wegelin Early American Plays 1904 in his citation for this work. HILL American Plays 35. WEGELIN p.24. by D. Martha Van Marter 1839–1931 was a Methodist Episcopal editor and missionary educator associated with the Woman’s Home Missionary Society. She edited Children’s Home Missions a periodical designed to promote Protestant missionary education among youth and to cultivate support for domestic mission work including outreach to Indigenous communities immigrants and rural populations. Operating from East Orange New Jersey Van Marter was part of a transnational network with Mary Belle Evans of Delaware Ohio publishing the periodical. Offered here are the first eleven issues of Children’s Home Missions which covers a range of religious topics for the juvenile audience with a patriotic bent including articles on various schools giving an overview of Methodist education during the period. The first edition apparently did not have the four pages of additional material at the end. OCLC reports other copies of the second edition without the final four pages but only one the copy at Princeton which as them. Original patterned cloth over pictorial printed boards. New endpapers with presentation inscription from Elan O. Henkel a descendant of the compiler and printer dated October 29 1925. Twelvemo. Woodcut frontispiece depicting the letters of the alphabet and animals whose names start with each one woodcut title-page vignette woodcut alphabets and vignettes in text. Our copy has two final unnumbered leaves with eight woodcuts of different animals which is quite uncommon. A remarkably fine bright copy. The Henkels started the first Lutheran printing house in the U.S. in 1806. Ambrosius Henkel who wrote the primer also cut the woodblocks for the illustrations.</p> Salomon Henkel and J.H.
