Rare surviving set of such plans. Some of the plates have color generally have dates and some appear to have the signature and/or initials of H. B. Gundry. Lieutenant Colonel Henry Bowden Gundry was born on August 7th 1856 the eldest son of a company director also named Henry Gundry and his wife Sarah. He started at Dulwich in February 1869 and was a pupil for five years during which time he earned a scholarship before leaving in the summer of 1874 going on to take a place at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich. He passed out into the Royal Artillery with whom he was at first assigned to the Northwest Frontier of India seeing service in the Afghan War of 1878-9. He went on serve around the world; he was also steadily promoted through the ranks being made a Lieutenant as early as 1876 a Captain in 1885 a Major in 1893 and finally in 1903 reaching the rank of Lieutenant- Colonel. He retired to the South West of England. The declaration of war in 1914 meant that Henry was recalled to the Royal Artillery and he was assigned to command of the training of the 110th Brigade Field Artillery based in Somerset then to the 164th Brigade at Rotherham. He was appointed to command of the Lowland Brigade and passed away not long after on September 7th 1916. The Royal Military Academy RMA at Woolwich in south-east London was a British Army military academy for the training of commissioned officers of the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers. It later also trained officers of the Royal Corps of Signals and other technical corps. RMA Woolwich was commonly known as "The Shop" because its first building was a converted workshop of the Woolwich Arsenal. Plates are worn soiled and some have edge tears chips and creases. The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia was established by the learned naturalists of high Philadelphian society in early 19th century America to document the recent natural discoveries of a new nation. The founding members and contributors were the luminaries of early American natural history and sciences; Titian Peale Thomas Say and George Ord to name a few. The Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences was their clarion and was illustrated with wonderful folio-sized hand-colored lithographs by J.T. Bowen and Co. in Philadelphia America's premier lithographers of the mid-19th century and the very same company to produce John James Audubon's landmark lithographs for the first seven Royal Octavo editions of the Birds of America c. 1840-65 and both the Imperial Folio and Royal Octavo editions of the Quadrupeds of North America. c.1840-54. In essence the same artists and printers who produced Audubon masterful lithographs created this work. Educated at Eton and Christ Church Oxford he practiced as a barrister on the Oxford circuit for some years before turning to history. His major works were View of the State of Europe during the Middle Ages 1818 The Constitutional History of England 1827 and Introduction to the Literature of Europe in the Fifteenth Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries 1837. Although he took no part in politics himself he was well acquainted with the band of authors and politicians who led the Whig party. In an 1828 review of Constitutional History Robert Southey claimed that the work was biased in favor of the Whigs.
