Il est illustré de 147 figures hors texte, parfois dépliantes ou en couleurs, accompagnées des serpentes légendées d'origine ainsi que d'une carte dépliante en fin de volume. Cet ouvrage est le fruit de trois expéditions effectuées par Stein en 1900-1901, 1906-1908 et 1913-1916, soit presque de 7 ans de voyage, la plupart du temps à pied ou à cheval, sur une distance de plus de 40 000 kilomètres, dans le Turkestan chinois et aux alentours. En tant que spécialiste reconnu de la région, le président de l'Université d'Harvard aux États-Unis lui demande de donner une série de conférences sur ses expéditions. C'est à cette occasion qu'il rédige son récit. Au contraire de celles publiées précédemment, cette relation de voyage est destinée à un public large et non spécialiste, dans le but de faire une introduction géographique, historique et ethnographique de la région.
