Very good. <p>First trade edition and first publication of "La Foire d'Empoigne".<p>Inscribed in French and signed in full by the playwright on the half-title: "Pour Honoria Plesch pour la nouvelle annee pour une amitie nouvelle et pour le progres du francais.amicalement / Jean Anouilh / 1er janvier 61".<p>Jean Anouilh 1910-1987 was a French playwright whose career spanned five decades. Though his work ranged from high drama to absurdist farce he is best known for his 1943 adaptation of Sophocles' "Antigone". The play was seen as an attack on Marshal Petain's Vichy government. Anouilh was one of France's most prolific writers in the postwar period. Much of his work addresses themes of maintaining integrity in a world of moral compromise.<p>Costume designer Honoria Plesch 1919-1990 was born in Berlin. In 1933 together with her brother Peter and her family she left Germany and emigrated to England. Her most important professional assignment was as costume designer for the 1947 film "Brighton Rock" starring Richard Attenborough. Plesch was apparently Anouilh's neighbor for a time in Switzerland.<p>The text is in French. Paris: Les Editions de la Table Ronde, 1960. hardcover

Small neat handwritten control number "#21" on titlepage plasticized wrappers are lightly rubbed first and last leaf a bit age-toned very good or better. Issued for an intended production of the musical in New York in the 1974-75 season featuring Julie Harris the impending production created excitement being the first of his plays the French playwright Anouilh allowed to be set to music. Harris had co-starred in the non-musical version of the play with Edna Best and Eli Wallach. However the production with Julie Harris never came to fruition although the musical finally opened on February 7 1977 at Playwrights Horizons in New York City and ran for a grand total of two <br /> performances. Rare. OCLC appears to locate a small number of scripts for the non-musical version but no copies of the musical. This copy incldues all the lyrics but not the music. EDITION LIMITED TO ONLY 30 NUMBERED COPIES ALL BEAUTIFULLY PRINTED IN TWO COLORS ON FINE LANA WOVE PAPER. With five fine plates four of which are colored by hand depicting Valentin. WITH AN AFFECTIONATE SIGNED INSCRIPTION FROM VALENTIN TO BIBLIOPHILE RAOUL MORLIER for whom this copy was printed originally someone else's name was printed as the recipient of this copy but Valentin blacked that name out and wrote in Moulier's assuring him in the description that the other name was a mistake. The original French play was first performed on 5th November 1947 at the Théâtre de l'Atelier Paris directed by Peter Brook. 1950 saw productions of Fry's adaptation in London and on Broadway the latter starring Denholm Elliott in his Broadway debut.
