Quarto. 110 mimeographed leaves printed on the rectos only in screwbound blue Studio Duplicating Service wrappers titled in gilt. Small neat handwritten control number "#21" on titlepage plasticized wrappers are lightly rubbed first and last leaf a bit age-toned very good or better. Issued for an intended production of the musical in New York in the 1974-75 season featuring Julie Harris the impending production created excitement being the first of his plays the French playwright Anouilh allowed to be set to music. Harris had co-starred in the non-musical version of the play with Edna Best and Eli Wallach. However the production with Julie Harris never came to fruition although the musical finally opened on February 7 1977 at Playwrights Horizons in New York City and ran for a grand total of two <br /> performances. Rare. OCLC appears to locate a small number of scripts for the non-musical version but no copies of the musical. This copy incldues all the lyrics but not the music. WITH AN AFFECTIONATE SIGNED INSCRIPTION FROM VALENTIN TO BIBLIOPHILE RAOUL MORLIER for whom this copy was printed originally someone else's name was printed as the recipient of this copy but Valentin blacked that name out and wrote in Moulier's assuring him in the description that the other name was a mistake. Head and tail of spine very slightly rubbed gilt a little faded very good indeed. Signed on the cast list by seven of the cast members from the play's first London performance which took place at the Globe Theatre on January 26th 1950. They include Margaret Rutherford Paul Schofield and Claire Bloom. Christopher Fry's 1950 adaptation of Jean Anouilh's satirical play L'Invitation au château. The original French play was first performed on 5th November 1947 at the Théâtre de l'Atelier Paris directed by Peter Brook. 1950 saw productions of Fry's adaptation in London and on Broadway the latter starring Denholm Elliott in his Broadway debut.
