Joan of Arc has inspired many people though the ages through her own inspiration by angel voices that she a young country girl was capable of great achievements commanding her to lead the disheartened Army of France to victory over the invading and much superior forces of England. Because of her independent religious zeal however and despite having successfully carried out her mission she was brought before the Holy Inquisition found guilty of heresy and burned at the stake in front of Rheims Cathedral. This play captures the intense drama of the powerful aura of that short but powerful life. The shock waves of that episode in history has captured the imagination of many writers historians clerics lawyers and most of all people from meager beginnings who pursue their dreams. Come meglio si comprenderà una volta analizzati gli argomenti dei due eroi anouilhiani, la lotta tragica, nella pièce del drammaturgo francese, non è più tra due sistemi di pensiero naturalmente antitetici, bensì tra due sventurati atteggiamenti la cui convenzionalità è chiara persino a coloro che dovrebbero difenderli. Se Albert Camus, riferendosi alla tragedia sofoclea, ritiene infatti che Antigone abbia sì ragione, ma che allo stesso tempo Creonte non abbia torto - "Antigone a raison, Créon n'a pas tort" -, per la pièce di Anouilh sembra valere piuttosto la seguente formula: "Antigone ha torto, ma Creonte non ha ragione": entrambi gli eroi anouilhiani, chi per un motivo, chi per un altro, sanno fin dal principio della tragedia di non essere affatto dalla parte della ragione; ciononostante, essi continuano cinicamente a rivendicare la propria tragicità, ad agire secondo convenzione.
