1957355490720705London: Hodder & Stoughton 1957. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. Publisher's mid-blue boards with gilt spine lettering. A near fine copy in a D/W that is VG indeed priced 12s 6d net to the inside flap as called for. The D/W has a couple of tiny chips at the head of the spine and another slightly bigger chip one to the bottom edge of the back panel. None of the chips affect any lettering. There is a partial vertical crease to the back panel. A strange tense and fast-moving novel set in the Pyrenees. From Contemporary Authors Vol. 1 1967: Mary. Stewart once claimed Thunder on the Right as her least favourite novel. I detest that book. Im ashamed of it and Id like to see it drowned beyond recovery. Its overwritten. It was actually the second book I wrote and for some strange reason I went overboard splurged with adjectives all coloured purple. Laid in is a 16-line TLS from the Author dated May 1st from her former address in Edinburgh: "Dear Mrs Clark Your letter was forwarded to me by my publisher and thank you so much for your words of appreciation. I am happy that my work has given you pleasure. As you will see I live in the U.K. so mailing books for autographing is a slow and very costly business. It also means that I who am now without a secretary have to deal with the packaging myself and also walk half a mile with parcels to the post office and back again. There is no place for a car. Sop please do not send the book. I am enclosing instead a signed sticker to put in a book for your collection. Thank you for your interest. Yours sincerely signed Mary Stewart". Notwithstanding the Author's negativity towards this title the first edition is genuinely uncommon and this is a nice copy. Photographs/scans available upon request. Hodder & Stoughton hardcover
