18855577London: Kegan Paul Trench & Co. 1885. Boards. Very Good/Anthology of English poetry published for the gift trade in 1885 still the Victorian age. Indeed there is a gift inscription in ink: "Inspirations to the Celtic bard from a Saxon." Interesting to consider who among the poets represented is still well-known and who is forgotten. Charles Sedley Winthrop M. Praed Hartley Coleridge Yet Blake is there and all the Metaphysicals I thought their popularity came later. Two female poets are represented: Aphra Behn 1642-1689 and Anna L. Barbauld 1743-1825. The editor is not named. Octavo 17 cm; xiii 296 pages. Bound in faux vellum. Title in red on upper board and spine. Edges untrimmed. Binding mottled with age else fine. Kegan Paul, Trench, & Co. hardcover books
116440Philadelphia: George W. Jacobs & Co Publishers. Octavo pp. 1-4 5-286 287-288: blank note: last leaf is a blank printed in pink and black throughout original boards with color pictorial paper onlay on front panel decorated endpapers. First edition. Ten stories by Bulwer-Lytton Miss Mitford Agnes Strickland Mrs. Gore and others. A pretty little book with an unusual binding: a strip of cloth extends about a half-inch under the front and rear boards and goes over the spine board: printed paper labels on spine and front provide the title and decoration while decorative endpapers hold it all together. The front pictorial onlay has a nice drawing in the manner of Edmund Frederick of an idealized young woman. 1913 Christmas gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper. Several old Christmas stickers pasted to endpapers. A nearly fine copy. Scarce. OCLC reports 3 copies; no copies reported by COPAC. #116440 George W. Jacobs & Co Publishers unknown books

Spine ends a bit rubbed and spine a trace darkened offset to two pages from absent place marker but a very good copy with the booklabel of the Betts Collection at Yale and another related bookplate properly withdrawn and an early private bookplate. First edition. A substantial compilation though some of it anonymous. Authorship is noted when known but the compilers opted out of indexing same perhaps because their own identified contributions would have overwhelmed the index.
