Near fine in good quarter vellum chemise and slipcase the latter a bit worn with cracks and bumps at a few corners. First edition thus illustrated with ten large wood engravings a number of decorated initials and two decorations by Imre Reiner. From a total edition of 220 copies this is one of 170 copies on Rives signed by the artist with an extra suite of the woodcuts on Rives. An interesting production by the artist/designer/typographer. Hémard's lasting fame however lies in his book illustrations - always with a distinctly French character usually comic and often mildly erotic. Profusely illustrated with slightly disturbing almost surreal line drawings that push the satirical tone of the story itself to a new level. The modern edgy drawings are evidence of the relevancy and adaptability of the work of the eighteenth-century French writer Voltaire. The imagery does not exactly match up with the moment of the story it illustrates but rather offers a highly interpretive version of the events as told by Voltaire. For example whereas the text reads ".she observed Doctor Pangloss in the bushes giving a lesson in experimental physics to her mother's waiting maid a very pretty and docile brunette" the illustration shows a couple copulating in the garden. The announcement and Monthly Newsletter are near fine clean without wear with a few shallow creases to the bottom margin of the Newsletter and a small stray mark at the bottom of the announcement. The glassine wrapper is near fine clean with a few small chips to the corners and tail of the spine with light edge wear to the bottom edge.
