Bindings a little worn "stamp paper" pasted over small inscription on each pastedown small chip at head of spine of Volume III small scrape to boards on Volume II printing flaw in Volume I page 6 and Volume II page 59 with loss of a few words all legible slight light browning in Volume II small closed tear to 1 inner margin small tip off 2 corners no loss 1 plate reinserted slightly dusty at edges 2 closed tears into text all easily legible light offsetting onto text from some plates small ink smudge in 1 margin small tear to inner edge of map. A very good tight set. First published in English in 1804 with 12 plates and 2 maps reprinted in 1808. Large folding map of Hindoostan to vol I small tear at fold at point of attachment 8 engraved plates throughout each dated 1804. Title page to each volume. Original quarter plain red leather binding with marbled boards gilt to spine some scuffing and chipping to head/tails of spines boards rubbed edges and corners worn with several of the latter rounded. Contents good and tight missing front free end paper from vol I and rear free end paper from vol III title page to vol I somewhat rubbed and worn some general light finger soiling and light staining. A good plus to very good set of this rare early edition. This work was first published in 1804 in the same four volume format as this set the second edition appeared in 1808 followed by this edition in 1813. Later in 1823 a 2 volume edition was published. Nicolas-Thomas Baudin 1754-1803 was a French explorer cartographer naturalist and hydrographer best known for his expedition to map the coast of Australia then New Holland which he undertook from 1800 to 1803. While moored at the British base in Sydney for supplies he prepared a report for Napoleon on a potential French attack on the colony and later named the coastline from Wilson's Promontory to Cape Leevwin 'Terre Napoleon'. Baudin died of tuberculosis at Mauritius in 1803 aged only 49. Baudin's portrait featured in Volume Seven of 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' published in 1801. The magazine's engraver Conrad Westermayer based the portrait on an earlier image of Baudin made the previous year by painter Joseph Jauffret. The portrait which shows Baudin in a formal coat with embroidered collar is accompanied by a caption in German briefly is explaining his rank and naming his most important voyage.
