(vers 1820) ; in-12, 204 pp., reliure du XIXème siècle, demi-cuir noir, dos orné à 5 nerfs (quelques frottements) tête dorée (quelques rousseurs). Évariste Désiré de Forges, vicomte de Parny, poète de la deuxième moitié du 18ème siècle, naquit à la Réunion. Il vint en France à l'âge de dix ans puis repartit à la Réunion en 1773, prit position contre l'esclavage et revint à Paris. Pendant la Révolution, il ne prit pas part à la politique. Ses poèmes eurent beaucoup de succès au 19ème siècle et furent réédités jusqu'au 20ème siècle. Édition de 1798. Bon état.

The first edition of this work in a half speckled calf binding with marbled boards. Ink inscription to the half title page. Évariste Desiré de Forges vicomte de Parny 1753-1814 was a French poet who made his fame through his Poésies érotiques 1778 a collection of love poems which made a refreshing change to the formal academic poetry of the eighteenth century. Parny's work was often censored as it contained erotic content and sometimes blasphemous humour.This is his poem 'Les Rosecroix' written in twelve parts in the original French. In a half calf binding. Externally smart with just a little rubbing to the extremities and light shelf wear to the front board. Internally firmly bound. A first edition.Evariste de Parny was a French poet well known in the nineteenth century for his lyric poems especially the Posies Erotiques 1778-81 and the prose-poems in Chansons Madcasses 1787. He also wrote much humorous verse including the anti-religious La Guerre des Dieux 1799 and Le Paradis perdu 1805. The latter is a parody of Milton's Paradise Lost in four relatively short cantos.This work contains 'Le Paradis perdu' Paradise Lost a poem in four songs; 'Les Desguisements de Venus' The Disguises of Venus and 'Les Galanteries de la Bible' The Gallantries of the Bible'. A smart collection of French verse. In a decorative full calf binding with marbled boards. Externally sound with slight rubbing. Internally firmly bound. Contemporary full rose calf binding English binding signed Hering. Smooth spine decorated with grotesque foliage and a crowned eagle symbol of the Earl's arms. Boards stamped with arms and dotted fillet border. Inner dentelle and on the edges. One damage to the upper joint of volume II. Marbled edges. Spine very lightly faded. A lack to the title-label of volume II. Joints rubbed. Very handsome copy despite minor defects. Although the poet Parny pre-Romantic in his writing has today fallen into disuse he was not only popular but received unequaled esteem from his peers; thus Chateaubriand wrote: ""I knew by heart the elegies of the Chevalier de Parny and I still know them"" and Pushkin evoking erotic poetry said that Parny was his master. Ce titre, poème en 10 chants, avait été condamné par un arrêt du 27 juin 1827 mais a souvent été réimprimé clandestinement. Quelques petites brunissures sans gravité. Très bon exemplaire. Peu courant.
