According to the permission placed at the end of the second volume this fourth edition would have been printed in 1500 copies. It is illustrated with 2 engraved title-frontispieces bearing the mention ""Fifth edition"" and 5 figures etched by Coulet. Copy on blue-tinted laid paper. Later 19th century bindings in full blue morocco decorated in Du Seuil style signed Allô. Spines with five raised bands richly decorated with compartments fleurons fillets and gilt dentelles. Six-fold frame of gilt fillets and corner fleurons on boards. Gilt fillet emphasizing edges and headcaps. Wide gilt dentelles framing the marbled paper pastedowns. All edges gilt. A few very minor scuffs and boards slightly dulled otherwise a handsome copy. The Chevalier de Parny 1753-1814 was born on Île Bourbon present-day Réunion. He stayed in France as a seminarian then officer before returning to his native island which permeates his Madagascan songs. From the library of Léon Rattier with his bookplate. Manoury hardcover

The first edition of this work in a half speckled calf binding with marbled boards. Ink inscription to the half title page. Évariste Desiré de Forges vicomte de Parny 1753-1814 was a French poet who made his fame through his Poésies érotiques 1778 a collection of love poems which made a refreshing change to the formal academic poetry of the eighteenth century. Parny's work was often censored as it contained erotic content and sometimes blasphemous humour.This is his poem 'Les Rosecroix' written in twelve parts in the original French. In a half calf binding. Externally smart with just a little rubbing to the extremities and light shelf wear to the front board. Internally firmly bound. He also wrote much humorous verse including the anti-religious La Guerre des Dieux 1799 and Le Paradis perdu 1805. The latter is a parody of Milton's Paradise Lost in four relatively short cantos.This work contains 'Le Paradis perdu' Paradise Lost a poem in four songs; 'Les Desguisements de Venus' The Disguises of Venus and 'Les Galanteries de la Bible' The Gallantries of the Bible'. A smart collection of French verse. In a decorative full calf binding with marbled boards. Externally sound with slight rubbing. Internally firmly bound.
