An important edition: ".this is the first time that Paul and Virginia of St Pierre has appeared in an English dress; all the previous editions having been disfigured by impertinent interpolations and mutilated by numerous omissions and alterations which had the effect of reducing it from the rank of a philosophical tale to the level of a mere story for children. From this species of sacrilege the Editor has endeavoured to rescue this charming work; and having carefully compared the current version with the original retaining it where correct and freely altering and retrenching its errors and redundancies . the present Edition distinguished above all others by the luxury of its typography will be found to excel them also in being a more faithful transcript .".
