Issued in an edition of 365 copies this an "imperfect" copy because it was issued without a box. Signed by the artist. Inscribed by the artist: "To David sic Metcalf Greetings Wallace Putnam To Herman Melville a world of thanks". Also signed on the colophon noting that this is a "HC" copy. This was actually given to Paul Metcalf writer and poet Metcalf was Herman Melville's great grandson. Rare OCLC locates just two copies. BAL 13658. Two volumes. 8-page publisher's catalogue bound at end of volume II. The bindings although both are brown publisher's cloth do not match. Volume I is in Blanck's TZ cloth with orange-yellow coated endpapers whereas Volume II is in A cloth with yellow coated endpapers. The stamping on Volume I is a simpler pattern than that on Volume II. Volume II's binding is the earlier corresponding to that described by Blanck in the "Note" contained in the entry. Stenciled in brown ink in gothic letter on the front free endpaper of Volume I is the name "Thomas Melville." Tiny nick at crown of spine of first volume very slight rubbing to the spines otherwise an uncommonly nice set. The slipcase is present but neatly split at most of the joints. First printing in this format with Illustrations by Boardman Robinson and an Introduction by Clifton Fadiman. Copy #417 of 1000 numbered copies signed by the artist. OCLC's main entry for this edition calls for two pages of terminal ads which were not preserved when this copy was bound. BAL 13658 First American edition.<br /><br /><i>Mardi</i> the Polynesian word meaning "the world" is Melville's first pure fiction work while featuring fictional narrators his previous novels were heavily autobiographical. It details much like <i>Typee</i> and <i>Omoo</i> the travelings of an American sailor who abandons his whaling vessel to explore the South Pacific. Unlike the first two however <i>Mardi </i>is highly philosophical and said to be the first work to show Melville's true potential. The tale begins as a simple narrative but quickly focuses upon discourse between the main characters and their interactions with the different symbolic countries they encounter. While not as cohesive or lengthy as <i>Moby-Dick</i> it shares a similar writing style as well as many of the same themes.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Plumb coloring has faded and spine sunned with gilt dulled some foxing through out corners bumped with some light rubbing previous owner's name in pencil on title else about very good in a fine slipcase. This copy was originally in the format of the two volume issue in printed wrappers but with only the front wrapper of the first part preserved bound up in the 19th century as two volumes-in-one. 11871Melville Herman. REDBURN: HIS FIRST VOYAGE. New York: Harper 1849. First edition first binding first state with 14 pages of ads instead of 18. Original purple cloth gilt. Spine faded and mild rubbing but a tight clean copy of a book rarely found in the first state. There was but a single printing of 4508 copies; by the time of the Harper fire of 1853 2433 copies had been bound in cloth and 1955 in wrappers. The fire destroyed the 120 remaining unbound copies and 176 unsold bound copies. Although specific numbers relating to the first state are unknown it is much scarcer than the second state; even the copyright deposit copy was a second state copy. The book was published between November 10 and 17 1849. This copy carries an early owner's inscription dated simply "November 1849." BAL 13660. hardcover books

One of only 3 copies printed on Japan vellum. Superbly bound in full tan morocco by the Club Bindery in 1898 with gilt binder's pallet on front dentelle: ìFor James W. Ellsworth 1898 For James W. Ellsworth" who was for a time the president of the Caxton Club. The binding features and ornate spine gilt stamped design motif on five of six panels covers with single gilt fillet rule and wide gilt-decorated dentelles. With Ellsworthís bookplate on front pastedown. Measures approx. 6.25î x 9.25." Light rubbing to edges and spots to covers; and small closed cracks approx. 1.5" to the top and bottom of the front hinge but still quite sound. ìOf the three copies on Japanese vellum one was reserved for the Club archives and two were sold at auction at the annual meeting in February 1897 to James W. Ellsworth and George S. Payson for fifty and forty-five dollars respectively.
