The three-volume set was also one of the four titles produced by R. R. Donnelley and Sons' Lakeside Press under the "Four American Books" campaign with the other three being Edgar Allan Poe's Tales Henry David Thoreau's Walden and Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast. The volumes are bound in black cloth over bevelled boards with spines and upper boards titled and decorated in stamped silver foil top edges black. Acetate jackets have overall wrinkling a few chips and tears and are fragile. A strikingly well-preserved set of this amazing edition. Illustrated by Rockwell Kent. The stunning limited edition of what is widely regarded as the definitive edition of "Moby Dick." Melville's great novel was not well received when published in 1851 and it and he languished in relative obscurity through the rest of the 19th century. Rockwell Kent came to the rescue with the nearly 300 illustrations he produced for this edition while deeply immersing himself in the text as he worked over a period of years. The result is the closest thing possible to a Kent-Melville collaboration.<br /> <br /> Nicknamed "the fish in the can" because of the distinctive aluminum slipcase that houses the three volumes this edition is also a landmark in 20th century American fine press work book illustration and design. The legendary Lakeside Press limited edition - among the greatest illustrated interpretations of a great American novel a key publication in the Melville Revival and Kent's spellbinding masterpiece. A fine balance of philosophy and comedy like DON QUIXOTE but with epic Miltonic undertones MOBY DICK 1851 was not only Melville's most ambitious work to date but became one of his biggest flops. 'Je m'appelle Ishmaèl" - véritable édition originale de Moby Dick en français. The first notice of Moby Dick in French dates from the first volume of the Revue des Deux Mondes 1853 but Melville's vast novel was not translated into French until the 1930s. Jean Giono 1895-1970 was deeply influenced by American writers of the nineteenth century starting with Whitman. "The second great American Giono discovered in the 1930s was Melville . translating Melville was a labor of love - for years Giono would read him in the open fields" Edmund White. He began his translation in 1936; Joan Smith worked up a first draft that was rewritten by Giono and her friend Lucien Jacques publisher of the Cahiers du Contadour. The translation appeared in pre-publication serial form in numbers V-VIII of the Cahiers May 1938 to February 1939.<br/>The first edition was published in the first half of 1939 in a small print run variously described as only thirty copies or 600 copies here in a choice contemporary binding with the wrappers preserved. The outbreak of war put an end to the literary efforts of the Cahiers du Contadour. Giono's translation gained wider distribution in the Gallimard reprint in May 1941. We are not aware however of another variant printing of the set. The Standard Edition was published episodically with the inevitable consequence that complete sets are rare. Seven of the volumes in the present set are in their original dust jackets which are extremely rare and fragile having been printed on heavy acidic paper. The dust jacketed volumes include the first four volumes: Typee Omoo and Mardi Vols. III-IV and Vols. X-XII: The Piazza Tales Israel Potter and The Confidence Man. Remnants of other dust jackets chiefly inside flaps are included in a few of the other volumes.
