Each volume is bound in leather over beveled boards the first has a custom-made paper wrapper. Both volumes are signed: “R.W. Briggs 1928â€. The first album contains 45 leaves or about 90 pages of mounted artworks; the second album has 36 leaves or about 72 pages of mounted artworks. Most of the artworks date from the 1890s - 1910 including several dating up though the early 1920s and a few from the mid-1940s. Five loose pencil sketches and ephemera are laid in. The leather bindings are heavily worn with both spine backs mostly perished covers are loose along the hinges the second album has two detached leaves and detached back cover some dust soiling and light staining to the edges of the leaves both volumes are fair thus with the interior artworks very good overall.<br /> <br /> Two remarkable scrapbooks containing a trove of amateur and accomplished gouache and color wash drawings pen & ink and line drawings book illustrations decorative pen work and various graphic designs cards vignettes book plates letterforms decorative panels borders etc. together with associated photographs and ephemera. The scrapbooks were assembled by Richard Briggs and include several artworks by his brother David Briggs. The gelatin silver photographs were taken by both men and a third brother Harold Briggs. The works by Richard Briggs in particular document the influence of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement and of his teacher at the Birmingham Municipal School of Art Richard James Williams a leading illustrator of the British Art Nouveau. The scrapbooks include an autograph letter by Williams a letter of recommendation for Briggs from October 1900 together with printed examples of his designs and illustrations.<br /> <br /> Also notable are scenes from World War I by Richard and David Briggs including a full-page color drawing by David Briggs of the battlefield of Vimy Ridge. Among the later works are drawings and photographs of the English countryside by all three brothers together with drawings and photographs of various locomotives by David Briggs. The light blue wrappers a bit worn with a couple of tears and the original brads replaced very good plus. Labeled "Third draft Europe September 1950" on the first sheet along with a pencil notation that reads "not final draft." This copy also includes the epigraph from the poem "Anabasis" on the first sheet that was used intermittently by Williams throughout his many drafts.<br /> <br /> The Rose Tattoo is Williams' first full-length comedy which he called his "love-play to the world." It concerns a Sicilian widow from the Gulf Coast and her attempts to protect her attractive young daughter while dealing with her own renewed passions. This draft was completed after learning that Elia Kazan had passed on directing the play to do a film with Arthur Miller a snub that greatly disheartened Williams. Nevertheless the play which debuted on Broadway in early 1951 won Tony Awards for best play as well as best actor and best actress awards for Eli Wallach and Maureen Stapleton. A 1955 film version was also a success starring Burt Lancaster and Anna Magnani who won the Oscar for best actress. unknown

With The Glass Menagerie Williams set out to create a new kind of "Plastic Theatre" a highly expressionistic language of the stage to replace what he saw as the stale conventions of realism. In theatrical terms Williams's approach has been called Brechtian: It uses devices meant to create what the German playwright and dramaturge Bertolt Brecht Threepenny Opera Mother Courage and Her Children called the "alienation effect." Williams succeeded thereby revolutionizing American theater. Within two weeks of opening on Broadway in 1945 the play won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best American Play catapulting Williams to fame. In the words of the citation the award was offered "To Tennessee Williams for his play 'The Glass Menagerie' and its sensitive understanding of four troubled human beings" New York Times.<br />8vo. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof first heated up Broadway in 1955 with its gothic American story of brothers vying for their dying father's inheritance amid a whirlwind of sexuality untethered in the person of Maggie the Cat. The play also daringly showcased the burden of sexuality repressed in the agony of her husband Brick Pollitt. In spite of the public controversy Cat stirred up it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Drama Critics Circle Award for that year. Contains 167 albumen photographs printed on high gloss photographic paper. Introductory presentation photograph that reads: "To Mabel from Bert" on front pastedown followed by 103 images of the San Francisco Bay Area; 29 images of Santa Clara; and 34 images of the Yosemite area. Sizes vary although most are a variant of 3" x 4". A few have been artfully trimmed and perhaps about one half of the images have been captioned. The final image is of a well-dressed young man seated on a swing captioned: "Yours Truly Albert L. Williams." Original string ties present but detached modest wear on the boards the presentation inscription is a bit smeared but still readable some of the images show some fading but overall a near fine and very pleasing album.<br /> <br /> Our research reveals that Albert L. Williams b. circa 1877 was California-born at various times a manufacturer of gloves and/or salesman of gentleman's furnishings. He was married to Mabel sometime between 1902 and 1906. By the time this album was compiled most amateur photographers had switched to more easily usable Kodak cameras and technology. Williams's continued use of the albumen process indicates some devotion to the more complex process and a seriousness about his photography.<br /> <br /> The album is divided into three sections the first shows San Francisco and surrounding area: the Bay Alcatraz Mill Valley the Sutro Baths the Cliff House Land's End Fisherman's Wharf Mission Delores Golden Gate Park with buffalo and elk grazing the Tea Garden and the Boathouse. Notable images include the Night Illumination of City Hall the interior of the cavernous Ferry Depot and nine images of Spanish-American War soldiers - likely the 1st California Volunteer Regiment - marching and at camp preparing to disembark for Manilla with several images of the SS City of Peking and SS City of Sydney troopships in the Harbor. Other subjects include the lighthouses at Tiburon and Point Bonito a few images of the campus of the University of California at Berkeley and the Deaf and Dumb Institute at Berkeley.<br /> <br /> The final two sections feature the "Santa Clara Valley" with many bucolic images showing rustic tents and cabins along the Los Gatos Creek; the town of Wrights including the creek and railroad; and assorted shots of the Russian River the San Lorenzo River Camp Taylor Guerneville and Glen Wood. A remarkable letter in answer to Gallagher's inquiry stating that Esquire is planning a feature on the salutary effects of a number of drugs on the market mentioning an article in Life magazine regarding the drug Dilantin and wondering if Williams would agree to participate in the article: "Dear Miss Gallagher - I am very interested in pills that don't contain barbiturates or amphetamine. At night I take two doriden tablets and a 100 milligram mellaril - and I have no deleterious effect from them. Pills are dangerous but sometimes danger must be accepted. I think we all know that. I shall try to get hold of the piece on Dillantin sic which is a pill I never heard of. I always check out with my doctor whatever I take. To combine pills with an excessive amount of alcohol is the greatest indiscretion and one I avoid." William's apparently failed to follow his own advice. His death in 1987 was brought about by his choking on the cap of a pill container. Williams 1914-87 Mississippi-born playwright and novelist; winner of 2 Pulitzer Prizes for drama "A Streetcar Named Desire" 1948 and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" 1955.</p>
