Hardcover full leather red over boards. 8vo. xix 576 pp. Illustrated with 24 full-page plate drawings by artist Jean de Bosschere: 16 in full colour including tissue guarded frontispiece and 8 in b/w. Binding by George Bayntun marked on the upper left corner of the verso of the front flyleaf. Six compartment spine with five slightly raised ribs. Black leather label with gilt title in compartment 2; green leather label with illustrator in compartment three. Gilt borders rulings and dentelle on the spine. Gilt double line border and dentelle edges on the front and back boards. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Half title present. Text block shows slight age toning to the edges but overall it is clean bright unmarked and square with a strong binding. The spine and boards have mild shelf wear but the gilt ornamentation is still bright and whole. Slight creases along the spine and hinges but the leather is still subtle. The inscription "850.2" has been written in the first compartment on the spine in marker. A very bright and handsome copy in very good condition. Garden City Publishing Company unknown

A good copy the blue watered silk covers are faded around the the edges on four volumes and on the remaining volume 4th vol. the whole front cover is faded the vellum is a bit soiled on all volumes and there is a bookplate on the paste-down endpaper of each volume. The top edges are gilt. The frontispiece and the nine original etchings are clean and nearly all other text pages are clean. On the title page this is called the Mary Rose Randall edition. There were probably 26 six copies which contained eleven hand-lettered or illuminated initials. This is NOT one of those copies. The space is present for the initial but it is blank. Quarter bound in black leather gray illustrated cloth boards; laid in announcements of this volume in the LEC "The Inside Story" and a post card. Spines have a few very minor scuffs covers and page edges very lightly foxed front end paper of volume 1 has small rust spots where a paper clip had been affixed to the two laid in items and where the staples in the news letter contacted endpaper no marks or writing. Slipcase split along one edge moderate edgewear a few small spots like very fine paint spatter on one side. Quite handsome pair of this celebrated 14th century Italian novella collection -- the LEC's second time to publish it the first being April 1930. That earlier edition with decorations by T.M. Cleland and their usual limitation to 1500 copies they improved with this edition outside their usual yearly series -- and as the colophon at rear of the second volume notes it is limited to only 530 numbered copies this #198 signed beautifully in vibrant blue ink by the great Kredel. At about one-third their usual limitation the 1940 Boccaccio is understandably scarcer than their earlier production. Based on the unnamed translation of 1620 with two tales different translators added that were omitted from that first translation. Laid in the 8-page 8vo LEC "The Inside Story" leaflet discussing Kredel's work on this set. A lovely lovely set. NEWMAN A-12. The Limited Editions Club hardcover
