Translated and illustrated by Josef Pierre Nuyttens. 4 of 5 volumes lacking the last volume folio 15.25 x 11.25 inches bound in full brown pigskin with watered silk endpapers and printed on very thick handmade paper. The first volume is in fair condition at best with front board detached and much rubbing and wear including a long jagged scar to cover. The other volumes are in very good condition with light wear to edges and joints contents very good: a few of the plates have some faint rusty foxing to margins. Illustrated with 7 fine pen drawings hand colored by Nuyttens and the publisher C. B. Randall has illustrated the volukmes with several smaller vignettes in ink watercolor and gouache and occasional hand-colored and illuminated letters all initialed C. B. R. It will be clear to anyone that Randall is without much talent skill or sense of draughtsmanship but he sure liked to make fancy books. He is also noted for publishing a lavish edition of the works of James Whitcomb Riley. Nuyttens 1885-1960 was a Belgian-American artist now mostly known for his illustrations for four non-Oz novels by L. Frank Baum. He died in a house fire that destroyed a good deal of his art. C. B. 1906170171London: Henry F. Bumpus 1906. A finely bound copy of Rigg's edition the "most long lived of the early 20th-century versions" Armstrong p. 270. First published in 1903 in 1930 the translation was used for the Everyman's Library series and it remained the canonical British Decameron for the next half century. Rigg's translation leaves the most explicit part of the erotic story cycle in Italian the effects of which Armstrong argues "have been far-reaching for the reputation of Boccaccio in the British Isles at least. the editorial decision to demarcate the censorship in this way has no doubt contributed to the notorious reputation of this book as a repository of obscenity" ibid. p. 272. The Chalon plates originally appeared as a set of 20 alongside John Payne's translation of 1893; for Rigg's edition the publishers cut the number to the 12 least explicit plates. It also features woodcut reproductions in the introduction after the first illustrated Decameron published in Venice in 1492. 2 vols octavo 256 x 181 mm. Photogravure frontispiece to vol. SCARCE LIMITED TO ONLY 160 COPIES. A study of the genealogical tables used to decorate Boccaccio's great mythological work from manuscripts and the early printed editions. Genealogia deorum gentilium known in English as On the Genealogy of the Gods of the Gentiles is a mythography or encyclopedic compilation of the tangled family relationships of the classical pantheons of Ancient Greece and Rome written in Latin prose in circa 1360 by the Italian author and poet Giovanni Boccaccio. The first printed edition was in Venice at the early date of 1472. By 1499 no fewer then eight editions had published attesting to the popularity of the work.<br> Ernest Hatch Wilkins was a respected authority on Italian literature. His teaching career began at Amherst as an instructor of Romance languages from 1900 to 1904 and continued at Harvard where he taught from 1906 to 1912 and again from 1947 to 1950 as a visiting lecturer on Italian literature. In 1912 he went to the University of Chicago where he was successively Associate Professor and Professor of Romance languages until his move to Oberlin in 1927. From 1923 to 1926 he served the University as Dean of its College of Arts Literature and Science Wilkins served as Oberlin College's seventh president from 1927 until his retirement in 1946. He authored several respected works on Dante Petrarch and Papini. He was a corresponding member of the Accademia Della Crusca in Florence and was decorated with the Cavaliere della Corona d'Italia in 1920 for his international promotion of Petrarch and Dante. Illustrations have been copied in facsimile with a slight reduction from the woodcuts in the edition of the Decameron printed in Venice by the brothers De Gregorii in 1492. 1925164153New York: Boni & Liveright 1925. With Tice's original etchings First Tice edition signed limited issue this copy uniquely if erratically illustrated with the issued half-tone plates replaced with Tice's original hand-captioned etchings and three of Tice's expurgated illustrations in two states one of which not called for in the list of illustrations. This is number 334 of 2000 copies signed by the publisher this copy is unusual in being also signed by Tice. Several of the explicit erotic illustrations Tice produced for this work were deemed too risqué for general publication and Tice was asked to redraw them for the final edition; some of them were never issued. This set includes three of these ribald plates alongside their censored replacements. We were able to trace only one other set with a number of these illustrations included though in that copy they were half-tone reproductions rather than original etchings as here. A deluxe issue of 12 sets with etchings was also produced and we have traced only one copy of it in auction records. The etchings in this set are hand-captioned by Tice with page numbers that differ from both their location and the printed illustration list suggesting that they may have been produced for Tice's own reference when working on the book's production. The set is accompanied by a suite of the removed half-tone illustrations and a second set of 22 of the 48 illustrations as etchings these uncaptioned excepting one captioned p. 36. One of the etchings is in two states: one with Tice's pencil signature the other with the signature engraved. Clara Tice 1888-1973 was a notorious New York bohemian artist known as "the Queen of Greenwich Village". She was according to the New York Times the first woman in New York to bob her hair and she began exhibiting her work there from 1910 rising to prominence in 1915 when the Society for the Prevention of Vice attempted to confiscate her works which were on show at the bohemian restaurant Polly's. "Tice was apparently so highly regarded and so instantly recognizable as one of those 'queer artists' that her role in the first Greenwich Village Follies was simply to play herself. As 'Clara' she stepped out onto the stage at the appointed time outfitted in one of her typically bizarre bohemian ensembles and conducted a 'quick chalk talk of nudes bees and butterflies'" Keller p. 429. Throughout the 1920s she contributed to Vanity Fair and other magazines and illustrated several books such as this with her softly erotic illustrations. 2 vols quarto. Half-tone frontispieces 2 half-tone plates 48 etched plates the majority hand-captioned by Tice of which 3 are in two states. Folding box with 22 additional etchings and 44 half-tone illustrations.
