Die Abfassung erfolgte aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach zwischen 1349 und 1353. Der Titel Decamerone bedeutet - in Anlehnung an das Griechische - 'Zehn-Tage-Werk'. Es handelt sich um ein stilbildendes Werk der Renaissance das zum Vorbild fast aller weiteren abendländischen Novellensammlungen wurde. Die Rahmenhandlung verlegt Boccaccio in ein Landhaus in den Hügeln von Florenz im Vorort Fiesole drei Kilometer vom damaligen Stadtkern von Florenz entfernt.
