2009107742Folio. N. P.: The William Blake Trust 2009. Folio 95pp. Original quarter-maroon calf with black moiré silk-covered boards with gilt lettered maroon-morocco label to top board backstrip likewise stamped in gilt; portfolio in full maroon calf containing 19 watercolors reproduced in facsimile mounted within framing lines on heavy beige paper black moiré silk-covered double slipcase; illustrated throughout with color reproductions of watercolor drawings as well as engravings. As new. § Copy XXXV of the de luxe edition limited to 36 copies. The entire edition is out of print. From the announcement: “These watercolor designs which disappeared from the public eye from 1836-2001 came to light in a Glasgow bookshop and were later offered as an entity to institutions and collectors at a price which as it turned out none could afford or at least was prepared to pay. Eventually in the face of much protest the portfolio and the 19 designs were offered for sale in 20 separate lots at Sotheby’s New York in 2006. The drawings are now widely dispersed and it is most unlikely that they will ever again be seen together.†The sale was roundly condemned at the time as an act of cultural crime. This book and the facsimile portfolio are now the only record we will ever have of the original series. Happily the Blake Trust created a superb book which is and will surely remain the single most valuable reference work on these remarkable Blake drawings. The William Blake Trust hardcover books

Both were humanitarian organizations created to aid in relief and fundraise during the war. They were frequently used together and often put on events for war charities. Betty worked for both organizations as an actress and includes 8" x 10" photos of headshots and performances throughout. She also worked as a "Hospital Hostess" and can be seen stuffing envelopes making calls and painting a "V" on a vehicle. Two photos show a group of women wearing British & American Ambulance Corps sashes posed by a truck. Betty's scrapbook also includes a typed note signed by actress Antoinette "Toni" Perry inviting her to tea. A program and newsletter from the New York Theatre Critics' Review is laid in at the end of the album.

The American Theatre Wing had originally been founded during World War I in 1917 as the Stage Women's War Relief by playwright and director Rachel Crothers. By 1939 Crothers brought the organization back through the British War Relief Society. This time members included Mary Antoinette "Toni" Perry Helen Hayes Lynn Fontaine and Tallulah Bankhead among others. They set out to fundraise and organize donations of clothing for European refugees displaced during the war. During World War II they opened the Stage Door Canteen in New York to entertain servicemen. After the war many of the actresses continued on with the organization to help with post-war relief.

An interesting collection documenting a young actress' service during World War II. hardcover books

He was later implicated in a bribery scheme with James Rood Doolittle Senator from Wisconsin 1857-1869. On Conatty's behalf Doolittle was to use his influence with President Lincoln to obtain cotton permits during General Banks's occupation of New Orleans; in return Doolittle would receive 25% of the profits.
