Bound in publisher's maroon pebbled cloth with decorative gilt stamping to front boards and lettering to spines. Complete in two volumes. Near Fine with fading and slanting to spines light rubbing to extremities and slight bumping to corners. Front hinges starting front joints starting at head of spine L-shaped split to top of rear joint of Volume I advancing across the spine panel and Volume II binding exposed at page 268. The binding by Burn & Co. their ticket to Volume II back pastedown is an unusually attractive example of High Victorian design and the gilt remains bright against the maroon cloth. <p>Alexander Gilchrist's biography and selected works of William Blake established Blake's place in the Western canon and remains a standard reference work. The artist and poet a peripheral figure at the time of his death in 1827 was taken up by the pre-Raphaelites several of whom completed the second volume of Gilchrist's work after he died suddenly of a fever. Chief among the secondary authors was Dante Gabriel Rossetti who had purchased Blake's annotated sketchbook at the age of nineteen and added his own pages. The first volume is his biography whereas Volume II contains a compilation of Blake's own writings. At the time of this publication Blake remain fairly obscure with little known of his life.Blake was a Romantic poet and painter a seminal figure of the era. He wrote prophetic works though he was largely unrecognised during his lifetime.Volume I is illustrated with a frontispiece twenty-three plates and many in-text engravings.Volume II is illustrated with a frontispiece twenty-three plates and many in-text engravings.The illustrations are from Blake's own works done in facsimile by W. J. Linton.Collated complete.Gilchrist's biography remains a standard reference work on Blake however he died before the work was published. The work was mostly finished upon his death and was complete by his wife Anne with help from Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Michael Rossetti. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Spines are a little faded. Light rubbing to the boards and spines including to the gilt. A few minor marks to the cloth. Small chip to the front joint and front board of Volume II and to the rear joint of Volume I. Bookseller's label to the rear paste down of Volume I. Essick notes: There is No Natural Religion. The "Preface" dated 1886 indicates that the facsimile is based on plates "in the British Museum copy A and from some papers in my own possession copy L." However the printed front wrapper of Muir's Europe facsimile 1887 indicates that "Mr. Burt's copy H--which according to Joseph Viscomi is a forgery" was also used. This would seem to be correct since copies A and L are printed in olive and green whereas plates a1 a2 and b1 in the facsimile are in brown as in copy H. Also includes plate 2 of All Religions are One the original of which is bound into There is No Natural Religion copy M and Muir's own version of the missing plate b5. Delivered to Quaritch 8 Sept. 1886. The first facsimile of the second-longest and penultimate of Blake’s illuminated books which is known in only four copies. The poem follows the poet John Milton returned from heaven to the mortal world on a journey of self-discovery and renewal The William Blake Archive. Blake himself is present as the personification of Imagination and the poem contains many biographical allusions. It is exceptionally rich with numerous full-page plates. Stedman's account of the slave rebellion in Dutch Guiana 1772-1777 with 40 hand-colored plates 16 by William Blake. A best-seller in its day and translated many times Stedman's narrative was an important resource for the abolitionist movement across Europe even though Stedman himself was not straightforwardly anti-slavery. Stedman based the text on personal diaries he kept on his travels now held by the University of Minnesota albeit with his numerous accounts of sexual liaisons with free and enslaved women reduced and romaticised. Essick writes that "Stedman's narrative of the brutalities of slavery very probably influenced Blake's own anti-slavery position"; Blake's graphic illustrations of abused slaves infused with human dignity undoubtedly influenced the reading public and advanced the abolitionist's cause. Sabin 91075 called this "one of the richest contemporary accounts of a plantation society in the Americas." According to the DNB Stedman's narrative is "one of the most vivid indictments of slavery that have been penned." Stedman also depicts the social and natural history of the area in detail and many of the engravings illuminate his writings on these subjects.
