Poole 1824. <br /> <br /> Small 8vo xxiv 372pp. With an engraved frontispiece 4 full-page engravings including one by Blake 8 hand-colored botanical plates 8 plates of engraved music a calendar with an engraved title-page and 6 plates and 12 blank leaves titled "Album 1825" recorded by Keynes but not noted in other copies we have had. Publisher's original full brown calf central panels on both covers blind-stamped within a richly gilt border backstrip with four raised bands gilt-decorated lettered REMEMBER ME slightly scuffed and small black splotch ink on lower cover occasional small spots on plates as usual a very good copy of a de luxe issue binding on the first of three editions of the book.<br /> <br /> § First edition first issue of the book no state variance in the plate with a very early pencil inscription from one woman to another illegible repeated on the next leaf. One of the rarest of all of the plates designed and engraved by Blake. There was a reissue dated 1826 as part of the title probably published late in 1825. The plate titled 'The Hiding of Moses' was the last plate designed and engraved by Blake himself for a commercial publication; the original drawing 'Moses placed in the Ark of Bulrushes' which closely echoes a tempera now untraced that was executed some 25 years earlier is in the Huntington Library. Bentley BB 490B. Easson and Essick WBBI Vol. I XI recording the Rosenwald proof and 3 copies. Keynes Blake Studies XIX recording 7 variants but not mentioning the 1826 printing. Bentley in the U of T Quarterly 2011 noted: "The gift book Remember Me! with Blake's wonderful engraving of the 'Hiding of Moses' was more remarkable for its decorations than for its literary contents. Of the twenty-four copies recorded each differs from the others in the pattern of binding colour of fore-edges endpapers and the decorated sleeve-case. Despite this varied elegance the work had only a modest sale and the same sheets were re-issued in 1825 for the 1826 gift-giving season. This paucity of sales may be related to the fact that the publisher John Poole had little experience of book distribution. His speciality was as a maker of Marble Paper and Fancy Pocket-Books not in selling them.". unknown
18966716Boston: winter 1896. Octavo-sized correspondence record book 22.5 x 15 x 8 cm. bound volume of one hundred forty-three letters mounted on stubs. Mrs. Francis Blake wife of the physicist and inventor of telephone fame see DAB gave a small ‘dancing’ party for the ‘A’ list of Boston society. Participants were to depart from the Columbus Ave. station and return to the Huntington Ave. station 1:45 AM via private train. The original engraved invitation precedes the individual acceptance and rejection few letters which are divided by sex. A complete list of attendees is included as is the handwritten menu perhaps a contract with notes on what was to be supplied by the caterer Joseph Lee and what by Mrs. Blake. The stationery includes many addresses on Beacon Hill as well as the Porcellian Club Somerset Club Hasty Pudding Club etc. Some wear to the binder and to some of the correspondence at folds or at the edges. London: Pickering 1868. <br /> <br /> Small 8vo xiv 96 pp. A good copy in original cloth with a small amount of wear at spine ends and the paper label on spine darkened and with two small chips. Rear end paper slightly foxed and one or two spots on occasional pages but internally the book is a clean copy with just a touch of dusting to page edges. Small bookplate of John Johnson on front pastedown.<br /> <br /> § First printing after the exceedingly rare edition of 1783 known in about 24 copies. Bentley BB 129. "The original 1783 copies were seventy-two pages in length printed in octavo by John Flaxman's aunt who owned a small print shop in the Strand and paid for by Anthony Stephen Mathew and his wife Harriet dilettantes to whom Blake had been introduced by Flaxman in early 1783. Each individual copy was hand-stitched with a grey back and a blue cover reading "POETICAL SKETCHES by W.B." It was printed without a table of contents and many pages were without half titles. Of the extant copies eleven contain corrections in Blake's handwriting. Poetical Sketches is one of only two works by Blake to be printed conventionally with typesetting; the only other extant work is The French Revolution in 1791 which was to be published by Joseph Johnson. However it never got beyond the proof copy and was thus not actually published.<br /> <br /> Even given the modest standards by which the book was published it was something of a failure. Alexander Gilchrist noted that the publication contained several obvious misreadings and numerous errors in punctuation suggesting that it was printed with little care and was not proofread by Blake thus the numerous handwritten corrections in printed copies. Gilchrist also notes that it was never mentioned in the Monthly Review even in the magazine's index of "Books noticed" which listed every book published in London each month signifying that the publication of the book had gone virtually unnoticed. Nevertheless Blake himself was proud enough of the volume that he was still giving copies to friends as late as 1808 and when he died several unstitched copies were found amongst his belongings." An early phonograph-related sheet associated with the French soprano Marie Roze née Hippolyte Ponsin 1846–1926 whose participation in early demonstrations of Thomas Edison’s tinfoil phonograph was widely publicized in 1878. Contemporary reports identify Roze as the “celebrated prima donna†depicted singing into the phonograph in an engraving produced for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper New York April 20 1878 following a demonstration of the machine at Steinway Hall earlier that year. The same engraving was subsequently reused across multiple promotional formats including tickets to phonograph exhibitions advertising circulars and early phonograph-themed sheet music such as Phonograph. March Brillante.<br /> <br /> Related promotional material includes a poster advertising exhibitions of Edison’s new tinfoil phonograph in Toronto on May 28 1878 which employs the identical image of the prima donna singing into the apparatus beneath the heading “Edison’s Phonograph!†The poster announces daily demonstrations featuring singing speech and explanatory lectures illustrating the standardized visual language used to market the invention during its first year of public exhibition.1<br /> <br /> Roze an internationally known operatic soprano who later became Mrs. Henry Mapleson was connected with early phonograph demonstrations intended to showcase the recording and playback of trained vocal performance. The engraving linking her image to the machine circulated widely in print culture during 1878 appearing in illustrated journalism and promotional ephemera tied to touring exhibitions. Overall a very nice copy of what was an iconic image at the time. Blake was a highly prolific composer of over 5000 songs the most famous of which is Rock-a-Bye Baby.
