The illustrator Jacques de Sève's main work was unquestionably the Histoire naturelle générale et particulière for which he executed nearly 2000 drawings. Unlike the illustrations he produced for other sections of Buffon's monumental work made primarily from stuffed specimens his work on birds was essentially executed from living models. To accomplish this vast project Jacques de Sève drew inspiration from the works of the king's ""Peintre ordinaire"" Jean-Baptiste Oudry. This judicious decision won him the favor of the queen a great admirer of the master of animal painting. By incorporating small Boucher-style putti in the introductory vignettes of certain volumes of the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux Sève also gained the good graces of the king's mistress. These illustrations at once decorative and scholarly which appear in the present first edition were not retained in the duodecimo edition. A superb complete copy of Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon's Histoire naturelle des oiseaux by the French Pliny. As Ferdinand Hoefer wrote this work maintains the same ""magnificence of style"" as the other publications in the Histoire naturelle générale et particulière. Imprimerie royale hardcover

Bottom corner chipped. <br/><br/>An updated edition of Delisle's important map of the Northern Hemisphere. When first printed in 1714 Delisle's map was the first to correctly place the west coast of North America by moving it farther east from previous mapping. California is correctly shown as a peninsula not an island. However this edition continues the coastline of the Pacific Northwest with a large island labeled Foufang that is apparently Chinese and serves as the western boundary of a large Mer de l'Ouest. Other conjectural rivers and lakes including Lake Valasco appear to the north. A rudimentary Alaska is named Presqu'Isle du Nord-Ouest. Bauche improved upon the depiction of Japan although Hokkaido Isle du Jeso is still not shaped correctly. Only a small remnant of the Terre de la Compagnie appears near Hokkaido. <br /> <br />Delisle or de l'Isle 1675-1726 was the son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini who among other important contributions aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. The map not only shows Germany but also the Low Countries Switzerland Austria parts of Poland and Hungary. The plates were originally made by De l'Isle around 1700. Covens and Mortimer reissued them. Phillipe Buache was de l'Isle's successor and son in law he continued to reissue de l'Isle's maps in the later eighteenth century. Copperplate engraving with later hand colour. Linden - N. 559; van der Linde I 417f Second printing.</p><p>Van Zuylen van Nijevelt wrote a well-known treatise on the game of chess <em>La Supériorité aux Échecs </em>1792. The book's full title was<em> La Supériorité aux Échecs mise à la portée de tout le monde et particulierement des dames qui aiment cet amusement</em>. It was reprinted several times and translated into several languages.</p><p>The Dutch chess theorist Philippe Jules van Zuylen van Nyevelt was a civil servant general and published "<em>La supériorité aux échecs .</em>." <em>The Great Game of Chess.</em> in 1792. "The 'Volume de Planche' mentioned on the title page forms the second game for no other exists." van der Linde For a detailed discussion of the distinction between the first and second printings see van der Linde I 417 f. This edition is valued for its instructive examples on the management of pawns in the endgame. He was the first Dutchman to write a book on chess and probably also the first person to come up with the idea of random chess also known as shuffle chess a chess variant whereby the starting position of the main pieces is chosen at random. He wrote that he hated openings "with all those annoying constantly repeating patterns" and therefore thought of randomizing the starting positions of the chess pieces. "This produces a huge number of different situations so that no one can study them beforehand" according to Van Zuylen van Nijevelt</p><p><strong>Condition: T</strong>he plates and errata page are missing. Despite minor defects handsome and uncommon binding the set in good condition and well-printed. Les Cent Nouvelles nouvelles is the first collection of French novellas commissioned by the Duke of Burgundy Philip the Good to whom it is dedicated and who received it in 1462. It brings together one hundred very free tales by authors from the Burgundian court satirical and ribald in spirit particularly targeting women and the clergy. Pierre Champion attributes its authorship to Philippe Pot although 36 different storytellers can be identified. Their model of inspiration is clearly Boccaccio's Decameron. Along with La Fontaine's Contes this represents Romain de Hooghe's finest work who captured the spirit of each tale in a lively manner full of fantasy and humor. Chez Pierre Gaillard hardcover

This intimate circle originally comprising eight members would gather on Mondays at dinner to exchange ideas and to write; at the close of each meal every distinguished guest was required to set down a few lines whether in the coarse poissard style or in a more refined vein on paper. It was in this context that Les Fêtes roulantes ou les regrets des petites rues came into being in the wake of the celebrations held in Paris in honour of the Dauphin's second marriage to Marie-Josèphe de Saxe. Pastiche binding in plum half-shagreen spine with five raised bands framed by gilt dotted fillets and six compartments decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons marbled paper boards gilt top edge pastedowns and endpapers in shell-pattern marbled paper. Some minor rubbing to the paper of the lower board corners slightly bumped. ""In his youth the Comte de Caylus had paid considerable tribute to the literature of fairy tales which the translations from Arabic and Persian by Galland and Pétis de la Croix had brought into fashion; one does not find him again in these artificial creations to which he returned when he was nearly seventy. But in the intervening years his character as a writer emerged and declared itself in accordance with his manners and tastes and in how propitious a milieu!
