A perfectly serviceable set of all four volumes of the works of the mid-17th century French poet and critic Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux 1 November 1636 – 13 March 1711; he is alleged to have been influenced greatly by the Roman poet and critic Horace. A quartet of handsome little tomes nothing fancy but complete and sturdy. French language throughout and with fine engravings by Bernard Picart including a fine publisher device at title page and engravings at frontis. Gorgeous headers tails and initials. Scuffing to tips and edges spine heads and feet now protected in stiff plastic jackets. Gilt lettering over burgundy leather at label of one volume rubbed away on other three. Previous owner's penned inscriptions at first free endpapers from 1725 David Belhune. Lightly wavy texts light soiling to endpapers else clean unmarked and tightly bound. Bound in full leather five raised bands to spines; the set stands upright quite easily. Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux 1 November 1636 – 13 March 1711 often known simply as Boileau "was a French poet and critic. He did much to reform the prevailing form of French poetry in the same way that Blaise Pascal did to reform the prose. He was greatly influenced by Horace" according to his Wikipedia entry. He was the fifteenth child of Gilles Boileau and sibling to other famous siblings. When their father died he was left a small fortune and devoted himself largely to reading and writing letters.
