Boileau was an influential critic of French poetry and The Lutrin ostensibly the first mock-heroic poem which concerns the quarrel between two ecclesiastical dignitaries about where to place a lectern in a chapel is sometimes said to have given Alexander Pope a model for The Rape of the Lock.
