A very scarce work concerning a historical treatise by Boileau on the establishment of the Church of Rome by Louis Maimbourg. A very scarce work in a full calf binding. The theologian in question is Jaques Boileau. This work complied by Mainbourg. Small ink inscription to the title page. Louis Maimbourg 1610-1686 was a French Jesuit and historian. He was expelled from the Jesuit order by Pope Innocent XI in 1681 due to his public defense of Louis XIV. This work written in French contains his remarks on the historical treatise on the establishment and privileges of the Church of Rome and the bishops. In a full calf binding. Externally sound with rubbing to the boards spine and extremities. Lacking spine label. Small losses to the head of the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Boileau's controversial treatise on flagellation was vigorously denounced on moral theological historical and even grammatical grounds. As a means of salvation flagellation had a brief revival with the influence of Jansenism and Boileau accordingly modified his disapproval of the practice allowing that it could be beneficial. The first flagellants appeared in the eleventh century and the movement gained renewed vigor during the Black Death in Europe thus reaching its peak during the fourteenth century. This movement was rapidly condemned by the church as heretical and millenarian. The movement quickly became anarchic and a threat to order both of the church and of society. Missing the second leaf completing the privilege final lines indicating the date. The two frontispieces are also missing one should appear before the title the other before the Lutrin.
