After the great edition of Boileau's works published in 1718 in folio format and given the success fine editions of this author followed one after another in 1722 1729 1745 with variants. This last edition well printed whose subtle typographical variations suggest the reduction of a folio has been revised and the spelling has been modernized; the pamphlet Boileau aux prises avec les jésuites has been restored and a life of the author has been added. Finally one cannot emphasize enough the critical quality of this edition which takes up the abundant and judicious remarks and commentaries of Saint-Marc from the 1745 edition. 1956113597London: Hutchinson 1956. First edition in English of the roman noir that was turned into the 1958 Hollywood classic Vertigo starring James Stewart and Kim Novak directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Octavo original cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with light rubbing and wear. Translated by Geoffrey Sainsbury. The story concerns a former detective who suffers from vertigo. He is hired to follow the wife of a friend who is puzzled by her strange behavior. The detective becomes obsessed with the woman eventually falling in love with her but unable to explain her strange trances and her belief in a previous life. When she falls to her death from a tower he is unable to save her due to his fear of heights. He experiences a psychotic break. After his partial recovery he encounters a woman who is nearly the image of his dead love and he becomes obsessed with her. In the end she turns out to be the same person he was in love with--an actress who was hired by his friend in order to hide the murder of his actual wife. It was the basis for the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock film Vertigo starring James Stewart and Kim Novak. Attracting significant scholarly criticism it replaced Citizen Kane as the best film ever made in the 2012 British Film Institute's Sight & Sound critics' poll. It has appeared repeatedly in polls of the best films by the American Film Institute including a 2007 ranking as the ninth-greatest American movie of all-time. Hutchinson hardcover books

170034727à Paris: chez Jean Anisson 1700. Fine. chez Jean Anisson à Paris 1700 8.50 x 16.20 cm relié First edition. Contemporary full sheep binding. Spine with raised bands decorated. Red morocco title label. Lacking at lower headcap. Joint cracked at foot for 1cm. Corners slightly bumped. The first leaf is blank. Collation consistent with the Oxford copy. The first flagellants appeared in the eleventh century and the movement gained renewed vigor during the Black Death in Europe thus reaching its peak during the fourteenth century. This movement was rapidly condemned by the church as heretical and millenarian. The movement quickly became anarchic and a threat to order both of the church and of society. The pope delivered them to the inquisition in 1349 and the King of France Philip V banned the flagellants under penalty of death. chez Jean Anisson hardcover
