Hogg concibió esta novela metafísica de manera que fuese tomada por una historia real y llegó a incluirse a sí mismo como personaje secundario en esta caja de sorpresas narrativa.nTal vez sea difícil encontrar una obra si se exceptúa Los elixires del diablo de E.T.A. Hoffmann donde el tema del doble sea tratado con tanta intensidad como en esta obra clásica de la ficción sobrenatural. La composición de la novela es realmente moderna pues aparece primero el relato del editor un observador supuestamente objetivo y después las memorias del protagonista confesiones que son un ejemplo de estudio psicológico de un asesino.
