200578411Berlin: Stiftung Topographie des Terrors 2005. Presumed First Edition First printing. Trade paperback. Very good. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 10 inches. 240 pages. Illustrations. Appendix. Folding front and back covers. Slight cover wear. Some corners creased. This is a catalogue of an Exhibition that opened on 11 August 2005. The Topography of Terror Foundation was founded by the Berlin Senate as a dependent foundation under public law on January 28 1992. It was constituted as an independent foundation through the law of 1995. The foundation is supported by the state of Berlin and the Federal Republic of Germany. According to the statutes the purpose of the Topography of Terror Foundation is to relay historical information about National Socialism and its crimes and to encourage people to actively confront this history and its aftermath since 1945. Between 1933 and 1945 up to 15000 political opponents were interrogated for days weeks or months in the "police custody" at the "House Prison". As individuals or groups they chose refusal protest and resistance and many of them lost their lives in the process. The exhibition on the "House Prison" of the Gestapo headquarters focuses on the stories of numerous prisoners: their careers resistance activities experiences of incarceration in the "House Prison" and their subsequent fate. The example of this site illustrates the great importance of covert and open terror against political opponents for securing Nazi rule. This place also stands as evidence of people in National Socialist Germany - albeit a small minority - who were determined to maintain their political and moral integrity refusing to tolerate the crimes of the dictatorship. As individuals or in groups they chose refusal protest and resistance and many of them lost their lives in the process. A selection of more detailed biographies also highlights the varied backgrounds from which inmates came. Chapters offering an overview of the history of the SS and the police allow us to locate the history of the "House Prison" within the broader framework of the "SS state." 225 pages. "When the war in Europe ended, millions of Russian men, women and children sought sanctuary and freedom in the west. They met terror face-to-face. They were physically beaten into submission, and then shipped like cattle back to the U.S.S.R. to face Stalin's executioners or to serve long sentences in concentration camps... The author claims that this brutal appeasement... was initiated and carried out by the Allied Supreme Commander, General Dwight Eisenhower. From Survivors the author obtained the details of the Cossacks' fight for freedom from 1941 to 1945, and from them he learned the method used by the British to betray them." - from inside front cover.
