197080713Washington DC: Federal Burerau of Investigation 1970. Folio broadsheet 16" x 10-1/2". Offset lithograph printed in black on uncoated white stock. Old folds; faint stains soil; complete and about Very Good.

Original FBI "Wanted" flyer for Leo Burt the so-called "Ghost of Wisconsin" who was indicted in absentia for the 1970 bombing of a University of Wisconsin laboratory building resulting in the death of one graduate researcher and injury to several others. Claiming to be retaliating for the Kent State massacre Burt and three con-conspirators allegedly used a fertilizer bomb to destroy Sterling Hall on the UW campus in August 1970 apparently not realizing that the building was occupied at the time. Burt and an accomplice David Fine fled to Canada to avoid arrest; Fine was finally apprehended in 1976 but Burt has managed to evade capture ever since his whereabouts unknown. His story has been featured in a number of television specials including a 2007 episode of "America's Most Wanted" making him something of a legendary figure in the annals of American underground radical protest. 200578411Berlin: Stiftung Topographie des Terrors 2005. Presumed First Edition First printing. Trade paperback. Very good. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 10 inches. 240 pages. Illustrations. Appendix. Folding front and back covers. Slight cover wear. Some corners creased. This is a catalogue of an Exhibition that opened on 11 August 2005. The Topography of Terror Foundation was founded by the Berlin Senate as a dependent foundation under public law on January 28 1992. It was constituted as an independent foundation through the law of 1995. The foundation is supported by the state of Berlin and the Federal Republic of Germany. According to the statutes the purpose of the Topography of Terror Foundation is to relay historical information about National Socialism and its crimes and to encourage people to actively confront this history and its aftermath since 1945. Between 1933 and 1945 up to 15000 political opponents were interrogated for days weeks or months in the "police custody" at the "House Prison". As individuals or groups they chose refusal protest and resistance and many of them lost their lives in the process. The exhibition on the "House Prison" of the Gestapo headquarters focuses on the stories of numerous prisoners: their careers resistance activities experiences of incarceration in the "House Prison" and their subsequent fate. The example of this site illustrates the great importance of covert and open terror against political opponents for securing Nazi rule. This place also stands as evidence of people in National Socialist Germany - albeit a small minority - who were determined to maintain their political and moral integrity refusing to tolerate the crimes of the dictatorship. As individuals or in groups they chose refusal protest and resistance and many of them lost their lives in the process. A selection of more detailed biographies also highlights the varied backgrounds from which inmates came. Chapters offering an overview of the history of the SS and the police allow us to locate the history of the "House Prison" within the broader framework of the "SS state." Ships Erebus and Terror January 7th 1843 Lot Essay

Davis was Second Master on Commander Crozier's Terror and a number of his drawings probably the first ever of the Antarctic continent were used by Ross to illustrate his official account of the voyage published in two volumes in London in 1847.

James Clark Ross had reached the northern magnetic Pole in 1831 and was charged by the Government following the recommendation of the British Association for the Advancement of Science and the Royal Society to lead an expedition to investigate terrestrial magnetism in the southern latitudes. The expedition was the first British exploration of the southern latitudes since Cook's skirting of the Antarctic circle in 1773-4 and the sealer Weddell's furthest south of 7415'S in 1823. Bellinghausen had probably been the first to sight the Antarctic continent in January 1820 and Dumont D'Urville then discovered Adelie Land and Claire Coast. Their work towards the discovery of an Antarctic landmass was consolidated by James Clark Ross who penetrated the pack ice in January 1841 sailing into the clear water of the unknown Ross Sea and sighting snow-covered land on 11 January thereby becoming the first to discover a sea route to the continent. McCormick on the Erebus saw and named an active volcano Mt. Erebus and Ross was the first to see and chart the South Polar Barrier which he named Victoria Barrier and which was later named the Ross Ice Barrier. He made two further navigations of the Ross Sea and Wedell Sea before returning to England in 1843.

'Jan. 7. 1843.As we advanced to the southward two high rugged bluff capes at a great distance appeared bearing W.S.W. true; the nearest of them I named at the request of Captain Crozier after his friend Captain Nicholas Lockyer R.N.C.B.
