He is best known as Superintendent of Frontier Surveys in British India and author of numerous books including The Gates of India The Countries of the King's Award and Political Frontiers and Boundary Making. During peacetime Holdich was largely occupied with the survey of India. He was the chief surveyor on the Afghan Boundary Commission of 1884–86. The Commission soon found itself in the midst of a crisis inflamed by the Panjdeh incident. When this nearly led to war with Russia Holdich was put in charge of fortifying Herat against a potential Russian invasion. He later served on the Tasmar Boundary Commission of 1894 the Pamir Boundary Commission of 1895 and the Perso-Baluchistan Boundary Commission of 1896. He was awarded the Founder's Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1887 in recognition of his work . Frederick H. Stokes Company hardcover

When slavery was abolished in Brazil in 1888 coffee planters depended increasingly on immigrant workers from southern Europe and later Japan. Paulista coffee planters partially subsidized immigration and so controlled to some extent the origin and composition of the incoming workers. Work on the plantations was organized under a form of labour contract known as the colono contract a unique combination of annual salary piecework wages and non-monetary perquisites. The author examines this contract in detail and links its provisions to a variety of factors affecting coffee growing and society in So Paulo.1980 edition. Condition: Dustjacket shelfworn marked faded; boards lightly shelfworn. Foreedges lightly foxed pages clean and readable binding tight. University of North Carolina Press paperback
