These celebrated Lives of Illustrious French Men include the biographies of Charles VIII Louis XII the Marshal of Guise Francis I Charles IX the Prince of Condé Henry II etc. Brantôme would also go on to write the Lives of Illustrious Foreign Men Illustrious Ladies and Gallant Ladies. The plates are hand-colored with pochoir by Gréningaire and protected by captioned tissue guards. Title page in red and black chapter titles in red throughout the text. Contemporary binding signed by Thierry successor to Petit-Simier in dark green half morocco with corners smooth spine decorated with wide gilt and mosaic ornament top edge gilt covers and spine preserved.
