This is one of 40 sets only; this set is numbered "IV". 4to 29cm x 25cm 209pp 200pp. The two text volumes are unbound with the contents loosely inserted in quires. The first two volumes contain 24 aquarelles by Malassis. The third and fourth volumes contain 22 colour plates by Marcel Arnac. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS SET IS NOT COMPLETE - it should contain six different states of the Malassis plates but actually only contains two complete sets en couleurs & en couleurs sur japon ancien. This set does contain three different states of the Arnac plates en couleurs en bistre en sanguine. This set also comes with an original watercolour by Marcel Arnac the original of plate number 6 an original pencil sketch by Arnac for plate number 5 an original pencil sketch by Malassis and an original copper plate of one of the Malassis illustrations. Rare particularly so in the original wrappers. French historian soldier and biographer Pierre de Bourdeille seigneur de Brantôme's works give a picture of the general court-life of the time with its unblushing and undisguised profligacy. There is not an homme illustre or a dame galante in all his gallery of portraits who has not engaged in sexual immorality; and yet the whole is narrated with the most complete unconsciousness that there is anything objectionable in their conduct.
