Original textured brick-red cloth by Edmonds & Remnants with their ticket boards blocked with a geometric frame in blind spine lettered in gilt. Extremities a little rubbed a touch of wear to head of spine. Alexander Carlyle 1722-1805 was Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1770 and a witness to the 1745 battle of Prestonpans. Although first published in 1860 this autobiography was written nearly a century earlier covering events to the year 1770. Octavo. xvi 143 pages 70 pages of Arabic text Leigh Hunt regarded the fable 'Abou ben Adhem' as one of the best and a translation of it adorns his tomb though he himself did not read Arabic. It is this work of J.D. Carlyle that first appeared in 1796 which became his source though the numerous errors in the original edition were not corrected until the 1810 edition. Moses Stuart the great Hebraist and master of a dozen near Eastern languages wrote Professor Carlyle's translation has enabled the wider English to discover the sweetness of the Arabian tales. Bookplate dated 1832 from Library of Mrs. Whitby Mary Anne Theresa Whitby 1784-1850 of Newlands. She was a landowner antiquary artist silk producer and author. She was also a specimen collector experimenter and observer. In 1846 Whitby read a paper on silkworm cultivation at the Southampton meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at which Charles Darwin was present. In 1848 Whitby published A manual for rearing silkworms in England. Whitby was an active participant in the British Association; her articles on silkworms and silk cultivation appeared in the Association’s 1844 1846 and 1849 reports. In addition to her personal experiments which she undertook at her home near Lymington in Hants Whitby undertook experiments on Darwin’s behalf and sent him specimens. Whitby’s work on silkworms was referenced by Darwin in The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication 1868 Univ. of Cambridge. Bound in a newer 3/4 black leather over early marbled paper covered boards retaining the original endpapers raised bands compartments decorated in gilt double red leather spine labels gilt all edges marbled. Carlyle writes to John Sterling 1806-1844 for an account of his - famously poor - health offering the help of his wife and quoting from Goethe.<br /> <br /> Sterling was a Scottish author. A follower of Coleridge he was entrusted to edit his unpublished theological writings. Carlyle much admired Sterling's anonymously-published novel set during the French Revolution Arthur Coningsby 1832 and first met Sterling in person at John Stuart Mill's office in February 1835. In October 1839 Mill published Sterling's a controversial essay on Carlyle. They carried on a correspondence from the time they met until the end of Sterling's short life. Carlyle and Julius Hare were put in joint care of Sterling's papers and Hare published Essays and Tales in 1848 but Carlyle was upset with how it turned out and published his Life of John Sterling in 1851 using most of their correspondence in a highly edited form ODNB.<br /> <br /> Henry James Sr. who visited Sterling near the end of his life on the Isle of Wight called him "a perfectly delightful man just the antipodes of Carlyle and the only man Carlyle had any sincere attachment to" Boston Sunday Herald 17 April 1881.<br /> <br /> The full text of the letter:<br /> Chelsea Saturday Morning <br /> <br /> My dear Sterling - If it will not hurt you to write pray send me a little Bulletin with your own hand. I hear nothing but more or less contradictory accounts the average of which is a vague statu-quo.
